On the subject of translation, one of my formative experiences in understanding what makes video game translation so unique with stuff like throwaway dialogue you probably don't have time to actually read in gameplay was playing Ace Combat 3 back before there was a translation patch that inserted everything into the game. What I ended up having to do was bring all the supplies (PS2 with the tray open detection disabled by some tape, translation script downloaded onto a bulky laptop, AC3 burnt onto several CDs, a copy of Spyro to hotswap from) to a friend's house and trade off playing the game and reading off the script every level. It was a really unique experience to have to learn really quickly how to dub things on the fly and understanding that we had different needs for different categories of dialogue (cutscenes vs important story stuff during gameplay vs random radio chatter). More people should experience a game in this way imo, it's an experience I treasure.
