I live right by this castle! Not a Portuguese-inspired design (although it was unclear who came up with it first since Sir Maxwell copied the design of the nearby old castle whose architects we don't know), it was -and still is- unique (seriously, google 'triangular castles'. Caerlaverock seems to be the only one that comes up.) It was also genius because it was harder to seige and required less stone than a typical square design.
