Her heart warmed to his gentle nature and strong work ethic. He worked in a steel factory, while she waited tables at a diner. Together, they dreamed of a better life, though they lived in a small, cramped apartment in a rough part of Northton Ville, where crime was a daily reality. For now, a better place to live was only a distant dream.
But things seemed to be looking up. Robby’s steady job allowed Petula to return to school, where her natural brilliance quickly became evident. She earned her high school diploma in record time, followed by a degree in Economics. It was a brief glimpse of the future she had once dreamed for herself. Yet just as she began to see the possibilities ahead, life threw her another curveball. Petula became pregnant with Annelise.
Despite the joy of motherhood, the pressures of life weighed heavier than ever. Robby’s factory wage wasn’t enough, so Petula returned to waitressing. The pay was modest, but they needed money urgently. Eventually, it became clear why their bank account was draining. Robby had developed a bad drinking habit. What started as an occasional drink after work quickly spiraled into something much darker. Still, she stayed, holding on to the memory of the man he once was, hoping he might come back to her.
Years went by, and Petula worked tirelessly to keep her family together. As Annelise grew older, turning 13, Petula saved every penny she could to move them to a better neighborhood, hoping the change of scenery might help Robby. But the move came at a cost—Petula’s health began to decline, and she was eventually diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, the result of years of overwork and stress. Meanwhile, Robby’s drinking didn’t stop. Even in their new home, he was rarely present, either physically nor emotionally.
Then one day, Robby vanished, leaving behind only a small note with a vague explanation about moving to Rinsdale. He was gone, and Petula was left to pick up the pieces. Now truly alone with Annelise, she had no choice but to keep fighting. Her daughter became her driving force. Determined to see Annelise succeed, Petula secured her a scholarship at a good law school in Rinsdale. The end justified the means. It was the first real step towards breaking the cycle of poverty that had defined both their lives.
It cost Petula a lot. Her health, her youth, her dreams. But from all her struggles came something truly beautiful and precious, making every sacrifice worthwhile. Even as her body grew weaker, she knew she had given her daughter the one thing she had never received herself.

I thought the scene between Petula and Annelise was touching, and it really captured the all-too-common dynamic between a free spirited young daughter and cautious mom. I’m interested in how Petula warned Annelise about Henry Bagshaw. I wonder if Petula has ever had interactions with Henry. And I like that Annelise thinks she has things under control with Henry even though Petula and Wyatt warned her in the same day. Annelise is really sharp and well-intentioned, but there’s a naive side to her that can be exploited, and it makes me curious to see how things unfold!
