The original book is significantly shorter than any of the LOTR books (which, incidentally, were actually all one single book but the publisher broke them up to make them more appealing to readers). All were intended for kids around middle school age at the time. When they made the three Hobbit movies they had to add a significant amount of material to make it long enough for three movies. On the other hand, it also allowed them to use more of the original story than most movies do.

ahhh thanks for that!! The musical numbers were bugging me, but knowing they are from the books does clear up that confusion.

Gandalf, one of his many names, is an ancient being. A Maiar, popularly akin to an angel or archangel. I don’t recall if his exact age is known, but he’s at least as old as the shaping of Arda itself, if not older.

Hi, I've never been so early before! So, The Hobbit is it's own book within the world of LOTR. It's actually a children's book (hence the musical numbers, which are from the book)! A number of events from it were changed to fit this story, but it follows the same basic formula EXCEPT for the Pale Orc and Necromancer plotlines. Those, I believe, are from Tolkien's Unfinished Tales. They also include several characters who were never in the book of The Hobbit as, essentially, fan service. Side note, I read this book in elementary school and I thought I was the coolest cat because I would tell everyone the riddles from that one chapter.
