In South Carolina, towns like Aiken & Avondale, there use to be (may still be there) a large population of Irish Gypsies, most of whom do/did construction work, though locals said they ran scams via the construction companies they operate(d). During my travels there, I was taken around these neighborhoods with large, beautiful houses that were brand new looking, yet completely abandoned, as were most of the houses in these particular neighborhoods. My host took me around, and explained that those houses were all built to be part of eventual dowries for the daughters who still aren’t/weren’t of age. ‘Of age’ for them is rather young, 14 & 15yrs old, and they also took part, maybe even held, some of rather questionable beauty pageants for girls who look to be in their late adolescence, yet dressed up with make up as if they’re much older.
