Happy start of spring, everyone. While we’re hard at work on the Mirana update (here’s a few sketches), we decided to try something new in our free time by recreating some familiar scenes in a new format – with an animation update. It seems that many of you are happy with this new approach, so we’re going to keep releasing more animated scenes. The next one will be out very soon – in the first half of March; and if everything goes according to plan, you can expect the Mirana update in the second half!
Creating animations like this is somewhat similar to creating a new scene. The most difficult thing about it is the smoothness – ensuring there are no seams at any moment: when the animation restarts, when it loops or when the cream comes out. Also, every animation is, in a sense, a unique, custom solution because it requires a unique interface each time. We do a lot of UI testing and make sure the buttons don’t conflict, for example, when one button has to be disabled while another is active, but the right effects must be playing on screen at the same time.
Some of those things might seem simple and even banal; however, the game runs on our own custom engine. It allows us perfect control of every element, but also requires manual work for every new element.

>How often do you have to “argue” with Flamie about a game design decision or how a scene should look?
Not often. We make most of the decisions together, but we both understand and respect each other’s skills. Flamie has the final say on technical and design decisions while I have the final say on graphical and narrative decisions.
>How many days off do you have per month?
It depends. Running a Patreon is like riding a bicycle - you either keep pedaling or fall down.
>Do you feel like you’re improving as professionals, or do you feel stuck at your current level?
We have both improved massively. Flamie started out as a designer and front-end developer, and now she has an entire custom engine and some quality websites up and running under her belt. I grew as an artist and a writer. Flamie says the difference is very noticeable between scenes from the beginning of Luna in the Tavern and those from chapters 4 and 5. I guess it’s true. I am now capable of creating a tighter, denser narrative, which is the reason why every chapter is bigger than the previous one. This might sound strange, but I’m very proud of the scenes where Luna and Lanaya drink cream.
>How much does this kind of work affect your physical and mental health?
Like any other sedentary job. On the creative side, I sometimes need a mental restart after coming up with a series of scenes.

Поздравляю всех с приходом весны. Пока у нас активно идёт работа над апдейтом про Мирану (вы можете увидеть несколько скетчей) мы решили попробовать что-то новое в свободное время - знакомые сценки в новом формате, анимационный апдейт. Судя по всему, многие восприняли новый подход с энтузиазмом, так что мы продолжим выпускать и другие сценки в таком виде. Следующий подобный апдейт выйдет уже совсем скоро - в первой половине марта. Во второй половине марта (если всё пойдёт по плану) вас будет ждать апдейт с Мираной!
Создание таких анимаций отчасти похоже на создание новой сценки для игры. Самое сложное в таком деле - отладить плавность смены картинок, чтобы все кадры выглядели бесшовно во всех моментах: при перезапуске анимации, при её зацикливании или при появлении сметаны. Также каждая анимации является в каком-то смысле уникальным кастомным решением, потому что требует создания уникального интерфейса под свой случай. Мы делаем много тестов, отлаживая ЮИ, и следим, чтобы кнопки не конфликтовали между собой. Например, когда включена одна кнопка, то другая не должна работать, но при этом должны происходить те эффекты на экране, которые нам нужны.
Некоторые вещи могут показаться очень простыми и даже банальными, но дело в том, что мы делаем нашу игру на собственном движке. Это позволяет нам контролировать самим любой элемент, но в то же время требует ручной настройки при создании новых элементов.

>Как часто приходится "спорить" с Флейми на счёт того, как должна выглядеть сценка или геймдизайнерское решение в игре?
Нечасто. Большинство решений мы принимаем сообща, но оба понимаем и принимает компетенцию друг друга. В части технических и дизайнерских вопросах последнее слово за Флейми, а в графических и нарративных делах - за мной.
>Как часто вы отдыхаете за месяц (сколько выходных)?
По-разному. Вести патреон - это как ехать на велосипеде. Ты или постоянно крутишь педали, или падаешь.
>Чувствуете ли вы, что вы развивайтесь, как профессионалы в своём деле? Или чувствуете застой в навыках?
Мы оба сильно выросли в своих навыках. Флейми начинала как фронтендер и дизайнер, а сейчас может похвастаться целым собственным движком и приличными сайтами в продакшене. Я же вырос как художник и писатель. Флейми говорит, что разница очень заметна на примерах сцен в начале Луны в таверне и тех, что встречаются в 4-5 главах. Наверное, это так. Сейчас у меня есть силы развернуть более плотное повествование, поэтому каждая следующая глава в игре больше предыдущей. Может быть, это прозвучит странно, но я очень горжусь сценками про питьё сметаны Луной и Ланаей.
>Как сильно бьёт такая работа по здоровью и моральному состоянию?
Обычные проблемы сидячей работы. Мне в творческом плане после придумывания ряда сцен порой требуется ментальная перезагрузка.

The animations look great, as do the overall art/design. Couple of things that I feel could use some improvement are: 1. a skip button for entire dialogs. Although repetition is good, it would be nice to be able to fast-forward the game sometimes. I.e. when replaying any segment where there are different scenes with somewhat the same ending dialogs. 2. for the animated sequences it would be a huge improvement if you could add a second cum-button with infinite looping that when deactivated could end with a dripping creampie. If possible with the current engine of course. Other than that it's a great game with interesting story that's both sexy yet has some really interesting/intriguing elements. More, please!
