'I can't imagine a geography teacher from Hull would get the same reverence'. This literally made me laugh out loud hahaha

I am interested in the way the general public perceives the role of academia (especially the version of academia peddled by gurus) versus how academics view themselves. Eric Weinstein seems to be the version of a theoretical physicist performing active research that many of his followers think is the norm. How many theoretical physicists even know who Eric is, how many theoretical physicists are on Twitter, and how many theoretical physicists have a podcast and a host of other projects that don't seem to involve physics at all?

Good question! Have opinions and will discuss!

Is it just my skewed Twitter feed, or do US and Canadian academics have an inflated status compared with other parts of the world? Ever since I first entered conversations about Jordan Peterson I have been struck that has status as a 'Psychology Professor' seems to prove to his fan that he is an extremely rare and intelligent creature. I can't imagine a Geography Professor from Hull would get the same reverence. Perhaps I just have a chip on my shoulder because when I was a cleaner on my University campus all the American students called me 'maid' and expected me to fetch them things. Obviously I just used to scowl back and set about their feet with my Henry the hoover.
