Update about progress on Malone Episode

Just thought you might like some behind the scenes info on the Malone & McCullough episode.
As often happens we were a bit too ambitious with this one. The Malone episode alone resulted in 85 clips. Now we have had clip inflation but this is still a lot. It's on par with the Rogan & Jocko episode. McCullough meanwhile is awaiting clipping this evening.
I've listened to the episode about 2-3 times now so I know there is a metric tonne of craziness there too. But what we are going to try and do is make the primary focus Malone and to use McCullough clips sparingly to illustrate the similarity in techniques they apply.
Matt & I had planned an epic recording session last Friday but Matt felt under the weather, the clips were not finished, and I had a tonne of work/preparation to do ahead of a family get away. In any case we decided that we could probably do a recording on Saturday morning before I departed if we got up at 4am (Japan) and 5am (Australia). We did that but realised that this episode would likely to be ranty to record while my family were sleeping a room away so... we recorded Decoding Academia #3 about the Prisoner's Dilemma. Which might account (a little) for the brain fog.
The plan now I am back from my family trip is to record tomorrow, then start editing and release by Friday. It'll be a full normal episode with Malone as the target guru and McCullough as back up. That means Malone & McCullough are also going in the gurometer.
This means Bob Wright is bumped but we will probably turn that episode around quicker than usual as we have already listened to his episode and have got a lot of our commentary clear.
So that's what's been up. We had hoped to record on Friday, edit quickly over Sat/Sun & release on Sunday evening but c'est la vie!

Update 2: 50% edited, should get to 100% today. Will release on Friday with Gurometer episode.

I'm kind of excited, somehow -- take it as some sort of anecdotal confirmation? -- just finally got to hour 3 and Chris makes the same point about the Gurometer :). (When I wrote the above comment, I was at approx the 1/2 way point.) That really is my core take-away from this episode and why I think it was MORE than worth its length and darkness -- I think it will prove a pivotal episode for both a wider public understanding of and a strong bit of evidentiary substantiation for your guys' core mission... (and for reasons I can't readily articulate at the moment, I don't think the possible hammer-nail fallacy is at all fitting here -- almost the opposite: you have specifically set out to develop an instrument to allow yourselves and others to distinguish "nail/not-nail" and it's working! Don't let it go to your heads, of course, but, nice work ;)).

Yeah, it’s turned out to be weirdly powerful hasn’t it. We’ll have to be careful about having a hammer that makes everything look like a nail, but as far as I can tell we’re not doing that. Really must do some proper writing on the subject. Unfortunately we’re both crushed by our ‘standard’ academic work - partly from the doing the audio DTG which is (usually) so much more interesting!

Thank you Molly, we appreciate it! It’s a bit rough sometimes, especially when the intellectual component is thin, and the disinformation is strong. Hopefully we can do more fun / weird stuff going forward, rather than straight-up harmful health misinformation.

Sounds like it's going to be a treat! Regarding clip inflation: personally i think the most important aspect of the clips is to demonstrate the different tactics used by the gurus to sway listeners, so documenting every singe instance of a fallacy seems unnecessary. Ofcourse hearing you guys ridicule the insane takes of the gurus is a highlight of any episode, so maybe I should stop the "backseat driving" here ... 😅
