The phrase "Sunlight is the best disinfectant" assumes that the huge powerful nuclear ball in the sky is the truth and that the bad ideas are the tiny microscopic bacteria. In reality it more like Carl Sagan's candle in the dark where the truth is this tiny flame in a huge chasm of pseudoscience.

^ I would agree that Josh isn't really defending Rogan. He is defending the idea that people should be allowed to share their opinions, and more specifically that attempting to set the boundary for what is acceptable conversation is just not tenable for fairly obvious reasons.

I think the point is that it's the audience that will seek voices that they want to hear. The anti-vax movement was popular before Joe Rogan even touched it. I mean, we don't even know what % of Rogan's audience is vaccinated or if they are significantly less vaccinated than people that do listen to him

I'm sorry Emma 😔 I'm wishing them a speedy recovery. Similarly, my uncle is also convinced that Covid-19 is only a mild cold and that the risks of serious illness are deliberately being exaggerated in order to trick people into taking the vaccine. Moreover, he has stood by his position despite having known that my brother wound up in hospital after having contracted the virus (prior to getting vaccinated). My Dad has routinely attempted to persuade my Grandmother to get the booster and she very nearly did until my uncle then begged her not to, telling her that the booster would damage her immune system. It is so upsetting, my Grandad was even directly told by a nurse that he must get his booster because he is considered to be vulnerable but it is like his ears have become clogged up with antivaxx conspiracy theories. I hope things improve on your end and that your relatives (especially your Nana) change their minds and get vaccinated soon.

I feel you Louise 😪 It's so incredibly hard to watch in your own family. Update my end, the whole anti vaxx protesting group (5 of them) now have covid. No surprise. But luckily my sane Uncle has now got nana so she was not infected by them. But now the arrogant antivax idiots are pretending to be less sick then they actually are, in order to save face. And when I talked to nana and tried to say look they all have covid! Time to just get the jab! Nana said 'Oh no, they told me its just like a cold, I'm not worried'. Grrrrrrrr

I agree. I really liked the conversation, it was nice to see Josh, Chris and Matt engage with each other in good faith even though they had different opinions on specific issues. However, as someone whose family has also been directly impacted by misinformation (my Grandparents are refusing to get their booster jabs and my uncle has not even received his first jab) it is difficult not to see the spread of misinformation as being a huge issue.

When you guys played the clip of Rogan reacting to the primatologist who called in to say he was misinformed, that is what did it for me. That clip highlighted the dark side, the side that's not so laid back or cool or nice or just asking questions. It hit me like an abusive boyfriend that this man hates women. He was not calm like he is on his show and it's what gave the glimpse behind his facade. I'm disappointed that this incident still isn't seen as one of his lowest moments.

Agreed! Medical disinformation kills. I think Josh would be willing to grapple with that but it is important to recognise that is the cost.

I think it is easy to be a bit glib about the spread of medical misinformation when you are not directly being affected by it. In my family my 81 yo nana has dementia and is living with my aunt and mum. The whole lot of them are refusing to get vaxxed because they have bought into misinformation from sources including Malone! Now covid is taking off in NZ and they are all out at the protests (which the police are trying to stop by playing James Blunt and Barry Manilow) where they are likely to catch covid, and the chances of them giving it to nana and actually killing her are high.
