I'm not sure if you deleted the previous comment, but it should be possible even if the ranking is incomplete. Given that new gurus appear over time, it's inevitable. My first thought is that some version of (modified) Borda count should work: unranked guru receives 0 points, the lowest ranked receives 1, the next-lowest receives 2, etc. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borda_count) As with any method, there are paradoxes and tactical voting loopholes, but I think that's partly where fun results will be found :) The main question is: How to convince Chris and Matt to go over the whole list again for ranking ;)

Alex A

I think that's a good idea. I'll have to think about how to implement.

Christopher Kavanagh

Wouldn't object to it seen lots of opinions on him in general but I think the only people added are ones we have done a gurometer episode on.

Tomasz

Somethow this and your interview with him combined in my mind into a false memory of a full episode! Which I hope is coming ;) In any case the patrons could still rate him before you do... But I understand you don't want to fall victims to the priming effect, right?

Christopher Kavanagh

Yeah that’s just based on a 9 min special episode of his! We would need to do a full episode to get the full treatment.

Tomasz

Ummm what about https://decoding-the-gurus.captivate.fm/episode/special-episode-sam-harris-meditation-is-all-you-need ?

Christopher Kavanagh

Believe it or not we didn’t do a decoding episode on him yet.

Tomasz

Also: why did Sam Harris not qualify? ;)

Great idea! Was about to propose something similar myself, but since someone is already doing it, could you pass my suggestion to them? Here's the idea: instead of points, rank-rate the gurus. So for example, first select an axis, cultishness say, then ask the user to sort the gurus in de/increasing order (possibly with ties). Not sure if Google forms has something like that already coded, but I'm willning to help too if someone is interested. Although the current gurometer works surprisingly fine, I feel that (some of) the dimensions are incommensurate. When filling the above form I keep asking myself: is the score of 3 the "mean" for gurus or all people?
