I have a high school friend who posts tons of pics of "strange lights" all the time. It's one of his hobbies. He thinks they are evidence of ghosts/spirits. Before you laugh - the guy is a college physics professor! He had quite a traumatic/unstable childhood with a famous (by regional standards) musician alcoholic dad and is very superstitious and susceptible to all kinds of pseudoscience stuff, and it wanders over into a kind of religiosity much of the time. I suspect that it's at least partly this comaraderie/feeling of belonging to a group that's "in the know" that makes him feel good and keeps him focused on this. He's pretty harmless and very sweet/kind person so I would never challenge him on any of this, but it does make me wonder how on earth he can teach a science subject? Wish he'd listen to this episode! But maybe it would be cruel to take away his fun and sense of purpose.
