I actually read Avi's book when it first came out and I didn't find him hyperbolic or overly sure of himself. I read it as he was just putting an interesting theory out there for consideration, which is common in popular science books (which I read a lot of). However I didn't realise he had had become so popular recently. I guess it makes sense since alien stuff is def having a moment. I have not heard any of his recent content. Be sad if he is another scientist who goes a bit crazy after becoming more famous. I used to be a fan of Peter Attia the longevity doctor. But then when he got more famous he also seemed to get a bit red pilled. I abandoned following him when he posted he was having an argument with his state's licencing department about whether he could change his licence plate to 'UNWOKE'. That was a sad day for me :-(

Why do I get the feeling the people in Eric’s stories are about as real as the ones in Trump’s speeches? “They came to me with tears in their eyes, they said Sir, we’ve never seen anything like this…”
Chris Wishy
Why do I get the feeling that Eric needs to explain to me why he is making me feel like my stomach is churning.

Yes. Hope this okay: https://discord.gg/TudmDz6mUH

Isn't he just though? He gives new meaning to the "when they go low, we go high" motto. I wonder if he's just naturally humble and nice or if he's had to work on it. I wanted to hear just one snappy/snarky comeback to Eric's utter nonsense - just one! But probably Mick's approach was better: not giving EW any fodder or excuses for his tone and condescension. I think all that flip flopping he did about whether or not Mick is a nice guy was actually some little inkling that he looked the real turd in his pretty much groundless "criticisms" and then realized he'd better stick something nicer in there or he was going to more obviously look the A-hole. He still did, but now he can say "but wait, I said he was well known in this field and that he gets unfairly attacked - isn't that good of me?" Rolling my eyes!

I made it to like an hour of the original podcast but just couldn't take it any more. I actually was mentally fiercely willing Mick to be less nice to Eric/not apologize for *anything* to that whiny manipulative baby. Just way too nice a guy to have to suffer through that with EW. Got all pissed off about it again while listening to the decoding. Even when EW is trying to give a compliment he sounds like a smarmy, slimy, arrogant, full of himself and manipulative twat.

My hot take is that Mick is actually an angel from a higher plane because no mere mortal could engage with Eric's bulling with such patient rationality. Of course Mick would probably debunk this theory if it were put to him - patiently, rationally, gently and methodically. In general I think the terms 'narcissist' and 'gaslighting' are over-used (and inaccurately so) but I think they're bang on for Eric.

And Chris’s Southern old man accent was amusing.

This was educational. Recognizing passive aggressiveness and narcissistic gaslighting should be part of every high school curriculum.

Maybe this episode shows why Eric couldn't make it in academia? He takes criticism or challenges to his ideas too personally - like a personal attack that makes him feel bad. Whereas that's just how the academic process works and how progress is made.

OMG what a whiny little bitch. You can tell he's never been punched in the face before to have that kind of attitude. I mean I'm insecure myself, but thank God mines didn't manifest into that kind of passive aggressiveness. I almost felt embarrassed for him, but with how annoying he is that's hard to feel.

You guys are utterly brilliant at decoding💪This episode fulfilled all my expectations👍 keep up the great work. 🥰
brianshmrian
I find myself asking, "Why am I having this tight feeling in my chest when I hear Eric speak? How can this be explained?"
Maria Ramelton
Eric the 🍩🙄he seems to be completely lacking in self awareness 🤔

I have listened to the episode and I don't enjoy the feeling in my body right now. But if what you're doing here is not 'fun' but if it's a duty, because the world is going to be filled up with nonsense, I actually appreciate that. I want to be very clear about that.
Rodi
Hahahhaa Eric is infuriating. If this bs was directed at me, at some point I'd have to ask Eric why he's holding me responsible for the feelings in his mind and body. What an absolute weirdo.

Mick did a great job pushing back without getting noticeably angry and further allowing Eric to suggest he’s being bullied in some way. As an aside, I work in disability services in higher ed, which we occasionally abbreviate to “DISC”. Ever since I started listening to DtG, seeing “weekly DISC meeting” on my work calendar has started to make me chuckle a bit

On the topic of aliens et al, here’s a great video on Avi Loeb who has fallen into the heterodox space. He’s the guy that claimed the interstellar space rock from a few years ago was a solar sail from an alien probe https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aY985qzn7oI&pp=ygURQXZpIGxvZWIgY3JhY2twb3Q%3D

Eric makes UFOs a boring subject by injecting his own idiosyncrasies into it. I also don’t understand why the skeptical view of UFOlogy is seen as mundane. It’s still fascinating. Optical illusions, sleep paralysis, the influence of popular culture on individual experiences, hoaxes, actual military projects, etc. It is really fun and Mick gets that. However, since none of that stuff would break physics as we know it, to Eric it is boring.

Eric Weinstein here reminds me of Cartman in the episode of South Park where he keeps harassing Wendy but manages to weasel out of fighting her every time she confronts him. Just like Cartman he knows he can’t match wits with Mick but for some reason that isn’t going to stop him from being a total prick.

This one is peak Weinstein narcasism. Frustrating episode to listen to but very interesting as always. Mick West is the anti Eric Weinstein.
Jennydiver
Bravo to Mick for taking the high road with this absolute dolt.
Tim Graubaek
I don’t like interpersonal drama, but I would like to kick Eric in the shins. Dear God, what an annoying man…

Is there a DTG DISCord btw?
William LEGRAIN
Thanks for this. Got about 20 minutes into the MW/EW podcast and bailed. Glad y'all stomached it for me

On the number of the beast thing, apparently Bible scholars (real ones who work in History departments in real universities) actually agree that it is a number with meaning. Ancient languages often used their letters to also represent numbers, and the letters in the name "Caesar Nero" add up to 666. And lo and behold 616 is the sum for a variant spelling of Nero's name! In the historical context, it makes perfect sense for the author of Revelation to vilify Nero because he persecuted Christians (don't just take my word for it, you can find someone like Bart Ehrman discussing this topic). So Pageau is bypassing actually interesting historical knowledge to construct his symbolic ramble.

The "flex/flexing " comment during the interview, reallly got to me and im glad you covered it. It really shows what a complete PRICK EW is.

AGH I'm always like, "When do we get to go back to Weinstein world?" and then I just suffer when I get what I asked for. He's just so awful to listen to. So manipulative and such a victim.

Looking forward to the Chomsky ep. Interested to see where the gurometer lands. Doesn’t seem like he’d be up with the toxic greats, but he does have some interesting aspects that might push up a few of the criteria. He was my pick in the poll, so maybe that makes me DtG-heterodox?
