Iโm wondering if Mattโs water-craft experience was affected by too many negative ions. I mean, one can only be immersed in so much negativity before one starts to feel miserable.

Good experiment there. But if if the point is to self-optimize, Mattโs rowing experience may have given him that edge needed to help with figuring out the statistics problem. So, maybe it was the negative ions?
