Watching this just now since I was sick during it. I have had a few similar experiences with people saying crazy things about universities when I say I'm a professor. They are way off, whether you are talking about top tier schools or lower tier state universities like where I am now. Ironically people really can't understand the mindfuck of being in top tier university research departments compared to what the public thinks is happening. There was a professor in my department at Berkeley who literally was famous for setting one of his postdocs on fire (guy was fine and had to use the lab shower, but still). But because that guy was big in the field and brought in grants, he was offered millions to stay when he was moving to a different school. Most people think Berkeley is sensitive to student concerns, but in truth they are just a university that cares only about the bottom line. And honestly that is one of the tamer stories of abuse at higher levels of academia.
