Interview with Konstantin Kisin *Audio version*

We talked about the experience and thoughts about the interview on the livestream this morning. To summarise: it went roughly as expected and although I found some of Konstantin's arguments frustrating, it was much more of a proper exchange of views than with previous guests with such a significant ideological divide.
In any case this episode will probably come out with intro/outro AFTER the next decoding on the main feed.

I think it's worth noting that Kisin's conflation of 2016 and 2020 election-theft-claims is an emerging GOP talking point, increasingly pushed by the MAGA / illiberal-right faction of the GOP such as Kari Lake (GOP candidate for Arizona governor). Republican strategists, pundits and candidates are increasingly pushing the idea that all US elections are flawed, firstly to re-litigate 2020 but also, worryingly, to minimize any future scrutiny for whatever dodgy tactics GOP election officials might do at the state level in future elections. It's a completely partisan talking point and I think it highlights how thin Kisin's nonpartisan schtick really is.

Saying he doesn’t know anything about Hungarian politics shows him to be either disingenuous or just incredibly uninformed. The issue has been widely discussed and reported on for years. If he truly doesn’t know anything at all about Orban, people shouldn’t take his political takes on anything seriously. It’s much more likely though that he does, which makes claiming that he doesn’t worse because he’d be lying to avoid having to defend him and his fans.

I actually really enjoyed this mostly because it changed up the regular format of DtG. Admittedly, I don’t know who Konstantin is — so I don’t know If he’s accurately representing his past positions or just playing a somewhat dishonest position with the benefit of hindsight being 20/20 (namely around lockdowns and the relative risk of lockdowns compared to Covid).

I'm impressed at how Chris kept his composure and cool throughout the entire interview. Chris always responded very respectfully despite some serious affronts from Konstantin.

I was thinking the same thing - you need a sense of humor to be a comedian. Also, many comedians don't take themselves very seriously - or they pretend not to as part of their schtick; I'm sure there are plenty with massive egos (and you have to believe in yourself to get up there in front of people).

This was exhausting. Chris raised an issue. “You have no evidence of that. Give me an example.” Chris gave an example. “That’s just a single example of me doing that on a single occasion. You can’t generalise from that… And I disagree that I did that at all, because you’ve defined it wrong.” Is there an aperture rating on the gurometer? Zooming in on specifics when faced with a broad criticism, then zooming out when faced with specific evidence.
