In reference to Coffeezilla’s mentioning of the draw of theories for which people have weak convictions (I think that was the terminology), and thus the reason for the popularity of “theory of everything” books by Gladwell and the like, I recommend the new podcast by Michael Hobbes and Peter Shamshiri called “If Books Could Kill” precisely about these sorts of books

Like, from the perspective of their fans, are the gurus producing not such much analytical systems, but firehoses of new "lore". When a guru's loyal defender accuses critics of taking their hero "out of context" and admonishing us that "you need to listen to more of the content to get the context" are they not telling us something important about how they relate to the content and its creators?

Side-note. When the subject of MLMs and the feature of deliberate complexity came up, Chris linked in the proliferation of boddisatvas and hierarchies of angels/demonologies, etc. This reminded me very much of a feature of fan culture (for scifi/fantasy fans like Trekkies, not so much K-Pop etc). Half of the joy of fan culture seems to be the "pleasure of proliferation", that there are so many fictional alien races, sub-species of orc, dinosaurs, pokemon, etc, to learn about and master the lore. I'd be fascinated to see a look at gurus followership through the lens of the anthropological study of fan culture (I'm assuming such a field exists).

I agree his fans are rabid and very devoted and would gladly follow him off a cliff were he to become Petersonian or Weinsteinian (his content is naturally appealing to populist “everything is rigged against you” types who have a tendency to ignore or allow hyperbole) but that just makes me respect him even more when he generally refuses to allow his audience to push him to make more radical claims than he can justify.

I like Coffee specifically because he has so many opportunities to overclaim his evidence and be the hero and yet he generally sticks within what he can prove. When what he can prove is devastating, he’s not afraid to drop a nuke or two but only when he has the receipts. I would imagine there’s a lot of pressure on him to be sensational but he seems to me like a straight shooter. Glad to see him on the podcast.
