A little conspiracy hypothesis
🕑 Added 2023-01-27 07:02:02 +0000 UTCWe are busy editing up the Dennett episode but thought some of you might enjoy a preview of a segment from the opening section. It's our very own conspiracy hypothesis about one Lex Fridman.
Don't worry though it is not a conspiracy theory so according to Bret Weinstein colleagues we are all fine.
Let me know what you think.
The truth is out there!

It's just a hypothesis! ;)

This is honestly a bit too far fetched for me to believe. You should be ashamed to have suggested such a nefarious conspiracy.

Love Dennett! He was one of the first contemporary philosophers that I read who I thought made sense (and not in the sensemaking way). His story "Where Am I?" was part of a Philosophy 101 course at university (not long after I also remember reading a story by Australian sci-fi writer Greg Egan that was suspiciously similar!). I liked his Darwin's Dangerous Idea, as well. So I am a bit sorry to hear he is about him being condescending and sexist in person. :( I'm still assuming that Dennett will end up more on the Carl Sagan side of the spectrum rather than the Bret Weinstein side. In fact, Dennett vs Weinstein would make for a fun debate. I would like to see Dennett condescend Bret into submission! :D

Heroes seem so from afar, but if you meet them you’ll think twice.

I'm ambivalent about the Dennett ep. He is my favorite philosopher-- Consciousness Explained truly blew my mind. And yet I've met him multiple times, and he was condescending at best with hints of sexism every time. Also, Breaking the Spell was basically an amalgam of a slew of prominent theories about religious cognition without necessarily giving proper credit to their originators, with a definite ideological agenda that I didn't fully appreciate at the time-- just how comparatively even-keeled it was, compared to what Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens (the other three "horsemen of atheism") were saying. That said, I should acknowledge having written a glowing review of it for Method and Theory. :-D I was just so happy to see that he was writing about religion and cognition at all.

Every great idea starts with a minority of one, Chris

You keep mentioning the army of puppets, silent moderators, lack of response... I was really hoping your conspiracy hypothesis would be that Lex and/or his moderators are really just algorithms! Would explain both the bans and the naivety ;) The problem would be explaining his human body, so I could be wrong. But I could also be right, you know?

But seriously guys have you tried love and talking to people

I see that Chris's NY resolution must have been to be less provocative...

Now this hypothesis might be false, but it might also NOT be false. The fact that it's even plausible is just astonishing. This might just be the most important podcast you guys have made to date.

I'm simply astonished at the bravery of this conversation. Can't help but admire myself for listening to it!
