Also BTW I always considered the theory of firms to just sort of be a way to reason about abstraction? In thinking it kind of gives a strange tangability to them. But, ultimately that's just a thought right. I do not hold to there being a literal realm of forms out there where abstractions were made manifest and real personally, ultimately all that is just a thought. And ultimately it's just a way of studying abstraction. I think basically everyone who came after Plato threw the theory of forms straight in the garbage honestly, starting with Aristotle. Plato even criticizes the the theory himself in some dialogues. But it's still interesting because it was seemingly the first (reordered) attempt to do a generalized examination of abstraction, and so much of what has come since is a reaction to it, even if it's not agreed with very much.

FYI, I think that the usage of Platos Cave comes from Heidegger, who's entire book "The Essence of Truth" was an elaborate analysis of the platonic dialogue where it is featured. In turn this thinking passed down to his student Leo Strauss, who has become tremendously influential on the right. I've read the Essence of Truth myself, and studied Leo Strauss (specifically his analysis of Maimonodes). It makes me cringe to hear these guys talk about it because they're clearly semi educated about the subject and have never read any of what I cited above. It's just a meme to them, they read or saw some conservative say it second hand as a meme and so they regurgitate it with little understanding. Anyway it just became a way to signal you were a certain type of reactionary - the roman statue type who talks in pretentious language.

Bret, in this episode, is exactly the Bret that I first found so off-putting (before all the anti-vaccine and ivermectin nonsense). I found him so unbelievably pretentious the way he began talking about issues where he brought in all of these pre-ambular paragraphs that are supposed to take us on a scientific journey only to conclude, "I'm basically a bog-standard conservative really, and there's some stuff the kids are into which I just don't like", like some verbal Rube-Goldberg machine that does the equivalent of all kinds of over-elaborate steps using marbles, dominoes, clocks etc... only to switch on a light.

This was a good episode all around, but that last Brett clip was comedy gold. He’s just…he’s such an embarrassingly pompous dork, which along with his being a blowhard, kind of serves as a cover for those pretty hardcore right wing tendencies, but I so appreciated being able to laugh listening to you guys share that clip in particular!

I’m so glad that Matt clarified what Plato was actually presenting in his cave allegory. It irritates me how it gets used the way Brett and Heather do. As for the shooter, the most likely scenario is that he was lonely, bullied, obsessed with guns, and wanted to show the world that he mattered by taking on an important person.
