Christmas Guru Special 2024 (Advance Release)
🕑 Added 2024-12-10 07:23:07 +0000 UTCLucky Patreon folks that you are you have earned a proper early-release episode.
In this special festive episode, Chris and Matt are joined by guest decoder Helen Lewis to discuss the myths around genius, extract her 2025 Guru predictions, and, of course, participate in her annual Guru Quiz. Again, the decoders are challenged over their mastery of the gurusphere knowledge, and again, one is found wanting. Who will it be? You all know already... but act surprised, anyway.
But that's not all! We are also joined by Discourse/Discord creature & DTG Weinstein correspondent Dan Gilbert (Bad Stats online) for another mystery quiz and a dystopic guru squad-building game. You can play along at home and see if your guru squads can match the synergistic power of our chosen champions.
P.S. As it is an early release, if you find any bad audio snafus please let us know and we will edit before the release on the public feed.

Hilarious đ love you all. 2025 will be the year of Saad! đŸđ„

Iâm amazed the guys somehow missed Tuckerâs kink-daddy daughter-spanking insanity, but i guess thatâs a perk of not being *entirely* trapped in the US news and social media cycle.
Linda Sears
I know this wasn't part of the game, but it would be fun to have a talk off (who can speak fastest semi-coherently) competition between Ben Shapiro, Russell Brand, and Destiny.
Dada de Broglie
I think The Genius Myth. Comes out next June.
Linda Sears
Did she say what the title is?
Amy S
I was dissappointed that Russel Brand was not on anyoneâs team! He has a purple belt in Jiu Jitsu and can kick some ass with that. Yeah itâs not black belt but itâs good enough. Heâs fit. Give him a cold plunge and set him out for battle and youâre golden! đ
Dada de Broglie
Excited to read her new book. Sounds interesting.

Chrisâ choice of Scott Adams is legit psychotic. If Dr K is anywhere on that island, immediate cult formation happening. BUT, maybe the presence of that many competing gurus with narcissistic personalities will cancel out the cult effect? More likely, itâs a mutually assured destruction kinda situation.
Linda Sears
I just want to remind us all that Matt won last yearâs quiz with Helen. Chris got points deducted for some reason.
Scott Grande
This was fantastic!

Is this imagined fallout between Musk and Trump wishful thinking? Musk did not become the richest person who ever lived on paper through market fundamentals. And if Musk hasn't said it in private it's implicit he will double or triple Trump's net worth through some later scheme. That seems more predictive to me than imagined psychodrama. I would not be surprised if Musk went the Anduril/Palmer Luckey route. There's an opportunity there considering how well his investment in AI is going as a Johnny come lately with no novel ideas. DOGE or whatever is just another way to market to the public
Fiona St Clair
Now that would be something I would definitely watch!
Subodh Kafle
Surviving on the desert island with Eric as he loudly wonders what cabinet position Trump will give him once we get off
Tim Tripp
I think Musk lacks humility. He stands on the shoulders of others and appears to forget those who allow him to succeed, including academics toiling away on basic research. He appears to believe his own press and has let his ego get the better of him.
Emily
Some of his projects are funded by billions of taxpayer dollars. I think itâs only reasonable to hold him to a higher standard. Especially with the latest fiasco over the Indian Ocean.
Saksaas
Team Matt will surely be victorious. Unless itâs all a part of some sick reality show where they get supplies based on how entertaining they are. In that case team Chris will win hands down.
Linda Sears
Excellent points! He also has a good hat, so he must be prepared. Eric would be wearing his suit just in case, which could be uncomfortable when heâd refuse to take it off.
Subodh Kafle
Bret is a good choice for the island. Didn't him and Heather spend time in the jungle doing some sort of field work? And he wrote a book about how to live as a hunter gatherer so he's something of an expert.
Linda Sears
I wonder if heâd depress and/or bog down everyone with too much trauma talk. Iâd like to see him and Dr. K in a room for a few hours and see how theyâd diagnose one another after.
Linda Sears
He also literally owns a company that amplifies his ideas.
Jakub Tomaszewski
Destiny, Hasan and Doctor K. What a glorious therapy session that would be :D
Christopher Kavanagh
His promises tend to be more specific, more grandiose, and involve lots more money.
Ben Godek
When you were joking about Andrew Huberman and negative ions, I got the amazing mental image of him powering up like Dragonball Z character.

Helen talks about how many of Elonâs promises are vaporware, but how many of academicâs research proposals never yield the the results as promised? Iâm in the academic world of physical sciences and many research proposals have a similar flavor: promising to solve grand challenges but mostly not getting there. Why is Elon held to a different standard than other academics- or more broadly, to people trying to do hard/innovative things?
JustTheWorstEver
HOW has it been a year since the last Helen Lewis review? I missed her amazing voice.
Fiona St Clair
I canât believe no one chose Gabor Mate. Heâs super skinny, so wouldnât eat too much. Heâs an actual GP type physician with decades of practice, so he could attend to injuries and illnesses. And finally, he could probably find some psychedelic plants for recreation. Oh, and the win for Matt. Love that he chose Sabine. I think sheâd be a lot of fun to have around.
YellowDreams
Team Matt for sure. I think Scott Adamâs would literally melt in the sun Chris. Not to mention drive one inseeeeeen
Nancy Hale
Team Matt FTW on guru island. I think Sabine harbors hitherto unknown skills & do not underestimate the power of Talibâs withering insults to demoralize the competition. Safe travels and sane holidays to all!
Jen
I donât know if you covered it but this is sooo funny!! Francis from Triggernometry tribute from Daniel Gilbert aka Bad Stats. đ https://youtu.be/DDT9-ISf1mM?feature=shared
Eric Quirk
Helen is simply an international treasure, and a lovely person to boot
Kimberly Beer
Helen is so funny! You guys giggling just cracks me up. Happy holidays, and thank you!
Jean-François Melançon
I island survivor team would be Jocko Wilink and the Redscare girls. I think Jocko and me can do all the survival work easily while the Dasha and Anna spy and gossip about the other teams.
Jean-François Melançon
Awesome idea!
Jean-François Melançon
Yeah, that's what I was gonna comment. Maybe it's just my personal disposition, but Jocko seems like someone that's very pleasant to be around.
Jean-François Melançon
I concur, Matt's team wins hands down!
Brink
If only podcasts had subtitles.

Did someone call one of the decoders âQuizimodoâ?
Randy
"Matt, do you have anything you'd like to add to the brassiere?"
Mark Francis
Yes, Elonâs views are nothing like Teslaâs and everything like Thomas Edison. Edison was a deaf, anti social, anti union and staunchly conservative crank, with some brilliant inventions that are still in useâŠ. In Edmond Morrisâs book âEdisonâ Morrisâs point out that the YouTube lore about Edison and Tesla is not true. Morris points out numerous antidotal stories to show they were cordial and respectful to each otherâŠ.Thanks for the entertaining episode!
Julie
âThank you MattâŠ. good job on waking up..â. LMFOA.
Duncan
Sounds like "fish-eyed goo".
Chomagerider
Helen quoting Theo's cocaine bit during the Trump interview in a matter of fact style was hilarious!!! I really hope Theo doesn't turn more into a Rogan!
Kyle Wilson
My favorite holiday tradition. Helen is the best!
Jen
Iâm saving this, itâs a present I donât want to open yet. Thank you!!! đđ đŒ
Linda Sears
Thanks, Helen, Matt, and Chris (ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future). Iâll let you decide which one is which.
Rod Hodges
âFish eyed ghoulâ made my day. God bless Peter Lorre
Kgar
Greetings DTGers, and Happy Christmas to our intrepid hosts!
Emma
I vote team Matt for the win! Two smarties and a muscle head, who is also sort of smart if nuts. What could go wrong.
Pixel-davis
New end of year ritual: the worse I do on the quizzes, the better I'll consider the year to have been for me
CrystalJade
Great episode. I do wish that the desert island question included a barbarian outsider guru that your choices have to keep your entire team safe from. I mean who wouldnât want the chance to see gurus throw imaginary rocks at Andrew Gold for example!
Christopher Kavanagh
Fish eyed ghoul.
Andy
Iâm taking Destiny, Rogan, and Jocko Willink (does he count?)
Penrice
What did the New Statesman call Konstantin? Rewound 3 times but can't get what Chris says.
Kurt Ressler
Matt picked the superior team, clearly. (just give it to him because heâs so poor at guru trivia)
Lord Brannigan-7
Hey, don't do yourselves down, even though it's true :)
Christopher Kavanagh
Helen is too busy and too famous for our poor podcast.
Kit McLean
Woohoo, Helen's back! One of my favourite Christmas surprisesđ
Lord Brannigan-7
No audio issues so far but can we have more Helen and less Chris and Matt next year please? KIDDING! It does work well with the three of you though. Interesting thoughts about Walliams and Carr too, talk about what happens when you stop singing for your dinner and it becomes a whole 'nother game. About halfway through when I wrote this, and I'm not even Gen A...
Robert Andrews
It's Chrrriiiiiiiiiistmaaaaas!
