Connor Mcharg

I was wondering how she might be useful - a scholar doesn't exactly scream combat-ready, and what we've seen of her powerset isn't helping, but in this particular situation, she is going to be insanely helpful. …as for more general usefulness, there's probably monsters that magically encourage you not to notice them, and an *investigative* scholar should generally be good at things like tracking, either to find or avoid monsters…

Markell

Ahh… changing energy gradient to pull from less dense areas.. the equivalent of setting the PSU to “energy saving mode”.

ShadeByTheSea

To be fair, sucking up the resources is what the kingdom wants for the most part. It wants to expand the kingdom. It can't do that unless the region of relatively low mana grows.

Connor Mcharg

Yup. Who's got the popcorn?

Douglas Miller

If someone wants to devote some of their own free time and effort to publicly documenting and organizing various details about my story, that's fine with me as long as it's all clearly fair use and doesn't break copyright. I probably won't pay much attention to it.

Douglas Miller

He'll certainly *try* that at some point, because it's just too obvious an idea for him to never think of it. Whether it will work or not is spoilers.

George

Oh wow, I just realized. We skipped over their answer about allowing Ressara to join them. If *she* were to get hit with the confusion and fear inducing stench, she should get super clear-thinking and brave. I'm excited to find out what the adventurer's clever plans are, and how they fall apart.

George

It is sad. Sure, we know Carlos would want to accommodate their needs, but as far as they can tell, these are just some high noble brats come from out of town to slurp up all the region's best resources. If that was what they were, attempting to talk it out would accomplish nothing and likely annoy whatever house they're from.

Question to the author: What do you think if someone made a wiki about Magic Is Programming? I mean a fandom wiki, not a page on the wikipedia.

Micha_i

Hmm, I wonder if Carlos could use the Comprehension Aid in the reverse mode - instead of using it to translate "magic" into english, what if he could use it to translate terms like "paralyze" or "lightning" into "magic language" and learn them without having to learn the term externally in the first place?

Crim2582

The saddest part of this is that if they just talked to each other and explained the situation Carlos would very likely side with them due to the value in trade that they can bring in. He's not gonna stop a gravy train that benefits him. It wouldn't be self-interested. My bet is that young nobles will siphon off all the mana in an area drying it up instead of drawing some and then leaving it to rebuild letting them keep sources of high mana density and treat them like a renewable resource. Done right and made safe it could be a way for them power level new adventurers/soldiers letting them have both a higher quantity and quality of standing forces. That would greatly upset the existing noble power structure though.

The theatre nerd in me suspects they’re planning a staged fight against a Wild Beastie to show how dangerous the wilds are. The DM in me wonders if they’re laying a trap to lure in a Wild Beastie and sic it on our crew. The software engineer in me sees the possibility that they’re leaning on some deeper knowledge of magic that Carlos and Amber can geek out about with them. And overall I’m just enjoying the mystery and looking forward to however it resolves 😎

Valderan

I mean, the mana gain hack was reviewed at the very beginning of the chapter. So a hole in space time that gains in mana and power as it develops under its own agency past its initiation IS in the land of possibility. I see nothing that could go wrong with this and I welcome the arrival of our new all consuming phenomena. May our worship date its wrath.

MindWright

Good chapter, it felt a bit meatier. Reading the spell off that gauntlet shows promise.

Maurice Brown

Okay point. I’m working from a POV of limited info in which our isekai protagonist isn’t really OP yet but can make some really astounding progress by knowing modern compsci concepts. When I look at it like that, I think they, the local adventurers, are going to do something that forces the royal guards to break cover and Carlos to do something insane that leaves everyone sort of freaking out a bit. Like combining the knowledge from the rune he observed and the unsigned integer issue to make some sort of targeted powerful black hole to deal with the stench and whatever that stench pulls in as a consequence. Or I could be totally wrong! Can’t wait to see which.

Douglas Miller

Yes, pulling aggro from nobles in a feudal society is a terrible idea. It tends to result in some variation of getting arrested and severely punished, possibly even executed. This is such a universal fact of life in a feudal society that it's generally safe to assume that every adult living in such a society knows it. So, either these people are surprisingly ignorant about how their own society works, or they're really really stupid, or they think their goal is worth the sacrifice, or they have a plan that they think will somehow avoid actually pulling aggro from nobles.

Maurice Brown

Pulling aggro from nobles in a feudal society is never a good idea.

Carl Mason

Presumably, their plan is to bomb the kids with the stink bubble. Just what exactly that will accomplish is unknown. Maybe they will be chased out of town by the locals because it is so terrible, maybe the stink is a scent marker and will draw the beast that made it, something well above their power level, and kill them without suspicion. Either way, dumb mofos.

axel jensen

This can only go one way :)

Douglas Miller

Maybe, maybe not. You still don't know what their plan actually is.

Maurice Brown

You. Dumb. Motherfuckers.
