Faces The Wind

politics in shark infested waters; apologies are showing weakness. asking for help is showing weakness, complaint about unfairness is showing weakness. Unless there is a directive for compassion to exploit then showing weakness is the same as making and/or emboldening enemies. Carlos was supposed to shut up and proudly do his best with the crumbs he was given, but his commoner background is a good excuse for his lack of noble pride and grace.

Jesse Wood

So, I've been theorizing about future soul structures, and I have two that I think will be added. An "extra RAM" soul structure that gives extra attention/short term memory for working on tasks. The other is a "parallel processing" structure that lets him focus on multiple things at the same time, though he has to divide his attention between the processors. They would have automatic synergy with everything because they provide mental resources that are used to operate soul structures. They would also be perfect additions to the existing super structure if they can figure the process out.

Carl Mason

Yeah, that whole setup bugs me, but it does make sense for a feudal type society whose aristocracy is based around having a fully functional soul. The suggestion of this for the condition of the aristocracy's souls (non-magical) is ironic.

Douglas Miller

Lorvan may not know everything, but he's not afraid to admit ignorance. He wouldn't just make something up about this, nor state a speculative deduction as a definite fact. And sure, this world may not have a strong tradition of scientific rigor, but we're talking about the details of something that literally everyone knows is the main key to greater personal power. A LOT of people have tried to figure out ways that everyone else missed to exploit it better to gain more power for themselves, and a lot of people have screwed up in a lot of different ways and then had to try to fix their screwup. Screwing up a merge is an obvious major potential failure point for nobles. It's happened many times, and many different houses have had to figure out how to deal with it.

Ryan

Yeah he brought it up, but I'm not really operating from a place of trusting the scientific rigor of this society.... I would do it myself if I was there. The idea of being able to merge once but not again seems clunky given what we know about this world. But we will see....

Douglas Miller

>It would be great to get someone to level up to 16 with a 9-structure soul, then give them the 10th, synergize up and see if it merges in Lorvan covered that one in this chapter already. With the 9-structure merge already done, you'd have to de-level to 15 (by death and respawn) to undo that merge in order to make the 10-structure merge possible.

Ryan

Perhaps this is because you need to have synergy with EVERY bit of your super structure, not just any part. It would be great to get someone to level up to 16 with a 9-structure soul, then give them the 10th, synergize up and see if it merges in

Douglas Miller

Partly, he's focused on academically picking apart the nit-picky hair-splitting details of a complex technical system. Partly, he's reacting to his annoyance over Lorvan having withheld information from him before. And partly, he's hearing what Lorvan's telling him now, thinking about it, and reading into it some potential implications that he really dislikes. Carlos hasn't really had to directly face before how much suppression and oppression, of information and of people who try to spread it, is embedded in how the society of Kalor works. Now he's been directly told, not just that people are refusing to tell anyone their own knowledge about certain things, but that independent discovery of important information by anyone who's too liberal about sharing it gets severely punished.

Ryan

It rather does nuke my comment, although Lorvan's explanation was rather unsatisfying- he does not appear to understand the situation completely (crown secret?)

Douglas Miller

Lorvan stated in this chapter that a merged structure will not merge again. If you build 5 megastructures that each contain 6 normal structures... That's it. That's as far as those 5 megastructures go. Your hypothesized merge into a 30-structure thing just doesn't happen. I believe that basically nukes the entire rest of your comment.

Josh

I doubt it's as important to try to make an 11-structure merge as it is to try to make a 10-structure merge while preserving the existing 10-structure merge, to try the experiment of being able to merge merged structures.

Josh

I'm not sure to what degree it's manipulative, and to what degree it's "OK, I was fine with your didactic approach of having us figure some things out on our own, until a surprise by something we didn't know and you did almost got us killed".

Jupiter

I initially got that impression, but it seems like an intentional approach to try to get an emotional lever on Lorvan to pressure him into spilling more secrets. Which is pretty manipulative on his part but he has done it a couple of times by now.

Connor Mcharg

If it's possible to merge in an eleventh and twelfth structure (like Carlos suspects, given the spare space in that section) that would make the super-structure stable at level 13 for eleven sub-structures, and level 12 for twelve sub-structures, which wouldn't help their absorption speed, but would weird Lorvan and Ordens out with their extra stability two+ levels ahead of schedule.

Leonard Marchant

Carlos seems different, distant and more arrogant?

Ryan

Update: I'm stupid. In N slots, you can build a single tier-N soul structure, containing 2^(N-1) tier-1 structures. Summing this for N=1~10, we get (2^10)-1 =1023 soul structure, which is 18.6 times as many structures as a naive plan! If arranged thoughtfully+ hierarchically, you would probably be able to construct basically every soul structure ever invented thus far (!) But you would need to start off with a soul level of 64....

Josh

Update: a couple of us brainstormed on Discord and managed to figure out the formula. Credit to retrorocket0 for the most critical insight. It's 64 divided by the synergies-per-structure ratio. Since synergies is the number of links between structures, if you have N structures with full synergies you have N*(N-1)/2 synergies. So, 64 / ((N*(N-1)/2)/N), which simplifies to 128/(N-1). And then you have to round up to the next integer level, since levels seem to be quantized. 10 structures, 128 / 9 = 14.222, round up to 15 9 structures, 128 / 8 = 16 8 structures, 128 / 7 = 18.285, round up to 19 7 structures, 128 / 6 = 21.333, round up to 22 6 structures, 128 / 5 = 25.6, round up to 26 5 structures, 128 / 4 = 32 4 structures, 128 / 3 = 42.666, round up to 43 And extrapolating for the two not mentioned in the story: 3 structures, 128 / 2 = 64 2 structures, 128 / 1 = 128

David

I was kind of surprised he didn't apologize. The crown was unaware they had been sabotaged. They were kept in the dark intensional and there was no way to know except by getting lucky with Purple.

Josh

> "Nine soul structures, with every possible synergy, will merge at Level 16. Eight structures will merge at Level 19. Seven will merge at Level 22. Then Level 26, then 32. The gaps grow increasingly large. The last threshold that I know is that 4 structures can merge at Level 43." Lorvan shrugged. "Most people never even get close to that point." Are these the levels of the soul structures (e.g. your 9 soul structures must all be at level 16 in order to merge), or the levels of the soul they're contained in (your soul must be level 16 in order to do a merge of 9 soul structures)? In any case, I'm trying to figure out the pattern here, and haven't worked it out yet. 10 merge at 15 9 merge at 16 8 merge at 19 7 merge at 22 6 merge at 26 5 merge at 32 4 merge at 43 I haven't found a function or well-known sequence (via OEIS) that matches any of: A) The numbers: 15,16,19,22,26,32,43 B) The numbers shifted to move 15 to 0: 0,1,4,7,11,17,28 C) The successive differences: 1,3,3,4,6,11 D) The cumulative sums of A: 15,31,50,72,98,130,173 E) The cumulative sums of B: 0,1,5,12,23,40,68

Brandon C

So 52 soul structures with 8 layers. This will be tricky. Unless of course it actually is a full 55 then merges for a third layer.

Neshura

Help usually doesn't hep there. Unless for some reason the spec sheets are uploaded into software. Now it wouldn't be unlikely to find the spec sheet stowed away near the hardware itself though so wherever the core for the magic system resides might also be where one can obtain a copy of tha hardware specs

Ryan

This is.... Problematic. If there is a neat way to merge second level soul structures then all is well and we can keep going through a third+ level. Otherwise, we will be neutered with the current plan and there will be complex trade-offs to get an optimal outcome. If you want to merge the optimal number of soul structures, you would construct 5 mega structures each containing 6 structures. They can then merge into a single 30-structure entity. Then, you can make a 5*5=25 structure using the remaining 9 slots. And so on+so forth. 8 slots: 5 tier 2 structures with 4 tier ones each, merged into a single 20- structure tier 3 structure (5*4=20) 7: 4*4=16 6: 4*3=12 5: 3*3=9 4: 3*2=6 3: 2*2=4 2: 2*1=1 1: 1*1=1 This would let you get 125 structures, although the final ones would be very slow to merge in. The naive approach, which they have been following, let's them only get 55 structures, 44% as many as my approach. But that is unsatisfying! Can we come up with a way to make tier 4 structures? I would say so. We can make 4 tier-3 structures, each holding 16 structures to build a 64-structure tier-4 structure. Alternatively, we could make two tier-4 structures, each holding 48 tier-1 structures (3*4*4). merging them would produce a single structure holding 96 sub-structures! Almost twice the entire original soul plan capacity! I suspect that with a 10-structure foundation, the best you could do is a 3*3*4*3= 108 (tier-1 structure construction- a huge tier-4 composite which fits inside a single slot. Doing this for all 9 slots will net you something like 400 tier-1 structures The issue with this approach is mana flow: how do you ingest this mana with the weak synergies of a 3-structure plan? That remains an open question. Ideally, you can level up your base soul level using a more conventional soul plan, then rip everything out and replace it with an optimal pattern. My next question to Lorvan would be "is it possible to voluntarily remove your own soul structures? If you have no structures but a base level of 50, what does that mean for your soul plan?" If the answers are "yes" and "you can rebuild quickly+easily" then I would try to accrue power quickly using a simplified version of the above plan + build a simple, 100-structure tier 2-3 plan, use that to level up massively, and then replace it with a carefully orchestrated optimal plan.

Ddave

Damn, are you saying we need to speculate on another 9 soul plans, with partial synergy with each other...?

BarGamer

I speculate that Lorvan will answer that the process is largely the same as for Amber: They'd be part of your House, with Oaths and Loyalty and all that jazz. The Game of High Houses begin with the trading of favors...

Nicolae

Would it be covered under "hardware"/ "device info"

Stevan Curcic

I had to stop taking my adhd meds and it sux ass. Hope you figure it out soon

viperfan7

Yay you're alive! Also I think Carlos should apologize, yeah he almost died, but don't blame the guy for something that they weren't, and couldn't be, aware of

Douglas Miller

This stuff is outside the scope of what `help` covers.

retrorocket0

Help is only help on the spell system. It doesn't have stuff on the soul structure/dungeon magic IIRC.

Nicolae

Does he not have the "HELP", or is he using this as a "I know this because I asked".
