The surface has an ambient texture. In order to make its light noticeable in Firefly you need to add a lighting object visible only in raytracing (in this case a torus). It's not a perfect as it will show up on reflections but as long as the reflecting surfaces are curved I can usually get away with it.

How did you get the letters to glow in firefly? Or is that post fx? You can place an actual 3d object like a box with 100 black so it forms a rect in the upper left corner.
