Dynamic Tone Mapping (DTM) vs HGIG - There's actually no "versus"

Yes, from what I'm seeing G3 is so bright, so accurate and with such an improved processing over G2 (and previous models even more) that HDR Filmmaker Mode OOTB with just DTM: Off is basically pre-calibrated and even close to 30k$ reference monitor picture rendition most of the time, diminishing if not nullifying the "need" of DTM this time. That said, DTM still much improved its processing as well and it's not raising mids and overall brightness as much as it was doing before, so it may still be suggested for C3 (in a bright room) but really not necessary anymore on G3.

HI P40LO - is your update re: g3 basically saying i can turn off DTM for movies now? any likely issue if i just leave it on?

DTM can improve things for games with no Peak HDR Luminance control or when gaming in dim/bright rooms...but has its downsides as well, including raising luminance to dark scenes in games (e.g. night time) which can be a bit offset by setting HDR Brightness 49 on the TV (which will also fix a slightly elevated black issue). The new DTM for 2023 models seems largely upgraded compared to all current version (from 5.000 analysis zone to 20.000!) so I will need to test if those downsides further improved or not. Like the article conclusions: best thing is to know which game will let you adjust Peak HDR Luminance and use HGIG for those, DTM for the others...and you can find a list of 200 of them here, personally analyzed for you :)

Hi P40L0, appreciate all the information you've posted here. I had a question regarding DTM, and it's probably a silly one, but I was wondering if having DTM turned on will be detrimental to dark scenes when gaming? Specifically, this is regarding PS5 HDR.

Yes it's correct, even if very few games actually use the system HDR calibration app but the point remains for in-game HDR settings as well (ideally HGIG = 800 nits; DTM = 4.000 nits with LG OLEDs). If you can't control Peak HDR Brightness or if you just want to pick one setting and avoid going back and forth, stick with DTM.

I play various games. Going back and forth from DTM and HGIG in the TV settings means having to adjust the number of clicks in the HDR calibration app everytime correct? I'm going between MLB The Show and HZD. MLB has no HDR slider so I leave it on DTM and HZD has a slider to adjust so I go back to HGIG. Just curious, thanks.

This was a very insightful read. Thanks for sharing this! :)

Thank You for this!!!

AC: Origins and Odyssey introduced a bug when using HGIG with 800 nits (as anything below 1.000 nits will turn the high dynamic range off, providing strange glitches) which can be fixed by setting them to 1.000 nits, even if not 100% accurate. Generally tho I already recommend DTM over HGIG when something with the latter is wrong or the game does not provide proper Peak HDR controls. Otherwise, like stated in the article, it mostly depend on personal preference and/or the room light condition when playing (totally dark rom = better stick with HGIG; dim or bright room = better stick with DTM) so I always provide both options for each person to decide in those cases. As you can see, there's no correct answer for everyone ;)

I love this and was just looking this up the other day. I have a question tho. In AC vahalla you state why DTM is the way to go, but in AC origins you give options because the game runs hdr better. Based on this article it sounds like hgig would be better for origins? Also, with what you posted, will you start giving your recommendation based on the games HDR implementation?
