Silent Hill 2 Remake - HDR Optimized Settings
🕑 Added 2024-10-06 12:48:01 +0000 UTC
The game is NOT using/applying Playstation or PC HDR Calibration app settings.
The game has a fairly good HDR implementations as it offer many in-game HDR controls including a Peak HDR Luminance slider which on paper can go up to 5.000 nits (but I've not found anything actually exceeding 2.000 nits in-game)
Unfortunately, by default black levels are bit raised, probably as a "creative intent" and there is no way to completely fix them by adjusting in-game settings.
That said, with the following changes you can still have a much better contrast and a better "HDR" rendition for the game compared to defaults.
UPDATE:
Patch v1.04 changed the HDR rendition of the entire game.
I updated my values again (as the previous were too dark/dim for many)
If you have an LG OLED and:
> you're using Dynamic Tone Mapping or Dynamic Contrast:
Set HDR Max Luminance slider to: 4.000 (nits)
Set HDR Mid Luminance slider to: 20
Set HDR Min Luminance slider to: -12
Set HDR Brightness slider to: 2.50
> you're using HGIG:
Set HDR Max Luminance slider to: 800 (nits) or 1.000 (for G2/C4) or 1.500 (for G3/G4)
Set HDR Mid Luminance slider to: 20
Set HDR Min Luminance slider to: -12
Set HDR Brightness slider to: 2.50
If you don't have an LG OLED and:
> you don't have an HGIG option:
Leave HDR Max Luminance slider to: 1.000 (nits; Default)
Set HDR Mid Luminance slider to: 20
Set HDR Min Luminance slider to: -12
Set HDR Brightness slider to: 2.50
> you're using HGIG:
Set HDR Max Luminance slider to the corresponding real Peak HDR Luminance of your TV in "nits"
Set HDR Mid Luminance slider to: 20
Set HDR Min Luminance slider to: -12
Set HDR Brightness slider to: 2.50
In all cases, set HDR UI Brightness slider to 200 (nits) and leave HDR UI Contrast slider to its default value (1.0)
Enjoy :)

BONUS
Even after the patch, the game still has an unstable Performance Mode on PS5 (visual glitches and unstable framerate) so it's better to play it in Quality/30fps mode there
Even after the patch, on PC the game still suffers from stuttering on any hardware (even the most powerful) but you can vastly mitigate it by following my new dedicated guide here and also applying my mod to the game here ;)

I don't think so

Has the HDR settings changed since?
Zac Martin
Should I pay for your mod and optimize the game? Its that much better then?
P40L0
The numbers in the image and in the article are always the most up to date. Personally I prefer HGIG on G3/G4 (and it's the one I recommend now too)
Zac Martin
I just bought this guide, thank you! Playing on RTX 4090 w/ 83" G4 LG on HGIG. As such these are the current numbers you recommend correct? I ask because the comments specify some different numbers. Set HDR Max Luminance slider to: 1.500 (for G3/G4) Set HDR Mid Luminance slider to: 20 Set HDR Min Luminance slider to: -12 Set HDR Brightness slider to: 2.50 Also, do you prefer DTM or HGIG for this game and why? Thanks!

No changes HDR wise
haris mohammad
They fix the hdr yet or any new changes for hdr settings?
Drugo-_-Lebowski
Finché non ripasticciano con un nuovo aggiornamento.
P40L0
P40L0
Sì prova, altrimenti incrementa a 4000
Drugo-_-Lebowski
Ok grazie.
Cosa consigli? Gioco su ps5 C3 con FMM+DTM

Try the old settings in the picture and see if it look better. Don't know why they messed with HDR after the patch... :/

I kept what he had but raised hdr brightness to 3.0 for now. I know it is too bright for now but i can’t remember the old settings. I have a c2 with dtm

The latest settings makes it too dark in game now on ps5. :/ hmm thank you though
MOD3
It looks great with latest settings thanks a lot

You're right, it looks even batter this way so I've updated the post again. Thanks for the feedback! ;)

Im on PC with LG Oled C4 and your settings and calibration in windows. Im used several of your settings but now, are you sure about this one? I updated the game and tried this HGIG settings, but the blacks crushing and washed. In full dark scenes its not dark black but gray. I tried now with 1000/42/16.40/1 and its much better blacks and dark scenes are blacks not washed and no black crush.

No, I would just play in Quality Mode / 30fps until the game gets patched at 60

I'm curious if there is any benefit to disabling game mode and using another picture mode with more effects to play with since this isn't a competitive shooter and we can afford the lag introduced. I'm on am LGC1, any tips to make the game less performance optimized and more visual other than switching to graphic mode via the in game menu? Do you know if VRR helps at all?
Kevin Landry
Thanks for the info! We all appreciate you making these guides as it saves us ALLOT of time (if you're a graphics non like me anyways) Maybe they patched performance cause I'm playing on performance and it's been pretty solid. The 30fps introduces too much ghosting for me when I move the camera. Can't wait for the PS5 Pro. Already pre-ordered 1 more month!
P40L0
That's not the case here. By default the game has noticeable black levels raise and a bit too flat picture/gamma. These values will improve black levels (while still not completely fixing it, they will still be a bit raised) while also improving contrasts and HDR rendition overall
Kevin Landry
What's up with the negative values for the minimum luminance? I've only ever seen it in I believe Cyberpunk.I was under the impression that I was supposed to get it close to zero in order to avoid crushed blacks🧐

P.S. Performance/60fps mode on PS5 is bad at the moment (a lot of clipping/glitches and unstable framerate even at 1080p). For now use Quality/30fps mode on base PS5...
