Draconic powers
🕑 Added 2025-06-01 23:06:25 +0000 UTCI've been thinking about what kind of powers the dragon soul provides for the character and how it ties into the gameplay and progression. The simplest answer would be superhuman stats like strength and agility, but I also want something more iconic and impactful, like how the Dragonborn character in Skyrim can learn dragon shouts for example.
The idea I'm exploring is a kind of unique draconic magic based on dragonfire, where the human part can magically siphon fire from the dragon and shape it into various fire spells. For example, imbuing their weapon with fire, incinerating objects at will, summoning walls of fire or simply casting fire from the tip of their fingers. Since the fire is derived from the dragon, it will also inherit all of its properties (like fire color and fire upgrades), and use the same "fuel tank" as regular fire breathing that empties when breathing/casting fire and refills over time.
These fire spells would add a lot of variety to combat/battles and let the rider participate more actively instead of just sitting there while the dragon does all the work. Perhaps you could switch between controlling the dragon and controlling the rider, letting the dragon fly autonomously when you control the rider so you can focus on hitting things with the fire spells.
The draconic fire magic needs to be very strong to be a viable alternative to simply breathing fire when flying, which might be an issue for when/if dismounted combat is added because those engagements would usually be on a smaller scale, like a dungeon with maybe 10 enemies at a time. A potential solution to this that makes a lot of sense is that the powers depend on how physically close the dragon and rider are, so when you are mounted they are at their strongest and you can sling fire balls that blow up walls and decimate regiments, while if you dismount to delve into a dungeon without the dragon, then the powers wane to a more suitable level for that scale.

I can't help but think of Skyrim, where the character gains the ability to use "shouts of power" - the same power the dragons use. it's like spells from a wand, but words from your mouth; the more words you learn for each power, the stronger it is. I LIKE YOUR IDEA BETTER THO (: but this is just one game mechanic I always fancied. In Fourth Wing, dragons are presented as powerful, intelligent beings who form a mystical bond with their chosen riders, but they are not subservient to humans. While dragons and humans form a partnership, with dragons needing humans to develop signet abilities and weave wards, they are not mere tools or pets. Dragons have their own society, hierarchies, and motivations, and they can choose not to bond with humans. They also have the ability to communicate with humans, but talking to a human they are not bonded with is generally frowned upon. this series has A LOT of similarities to Eragon, it's just the current one I'm reading right now & want to babble about it ((:

I would really love to see the dragons be their own characters, with their one personalities depending on how the player treats them. I think it could be like, a soul bond from Avatar, a deep connection between rider and dragon. Their separate and their own individuals but share a deep bond with each other. This could be shown in interactions between the two, ithe most you interact with your dragon, feeding it,petting it, the more it reacts to you? Then again, this will require more extensive animations and things so may not be possible. Another thing I'd really love is the HTTYD toothless idea, injured dragons being able to have specialized saddles to help them fly or even just the expressiveness of toothless in the dragons themselves.

I like the idea of the Dragon being sentient, kind of like Smaug or Saphira from Eragon, the idea of it being an intelligent creature that you can communicate and share dialogue with would add a level of emotional evocation and relatability to both the game and dragon itself. though this is what i think would be really cool, its understandable that it might be a bit much. FYI, i am absolutely loving the creativity and engagement you have for both the game and the fans, you are a very rare person and we should cherish you and this community. Thank you.
