Dragon types
🕑 Added 2025-03-24 00:27:23 +0000 UTCFans sometime ask if there will be other types of dragons than the one with two legs seen so far (often referred to as a "wyvern" but I prefer not to use that distinction because they usually have other characteristics that set them apart from dragons too). Well, now you've seen a version with four legs, so the answer is yes. You can stop with the Wyverntwin jokes now guys!
But that begs the question, will there be even more types? Maybe one with wings but no legs (often called an amphiptère), one with four legs but no wings (drake), or one with wings but just forelegs instead of hind legs (uhh I'm sure it has a name). What about eastern style dragons? Or that weird chicken-wyvern hybrid (cockatrice)? What about just a big ass snake?
Let's start with the most important constraint, which is flight. If it can't fly, then it won't really work with the way the game is designed. You need to fly to get to places, the distances are huge, much larger than most games. Did you know that the early access map is more than 16x the size of Skyrim in terms of playable area? It doesn't feel like it because you move so fast and the scale is more realistic, but trying to walk across the map would take forever. So basically, it needs wings. It's possible we might add some magical flying like eastern dragons at some point, but that would be a pretty big change and more suitable as a post-launch DLC.
Other than that, if it has legs it should be pretty easy to adapt to the current system. Both the two legged and four legged dragons use the same system for generating movement, so swapping to a version with just wings and forelegs that can crawl around on the ground wouldn't be too hard. If it has no legs at all it's a bit more time consuming to implement because then it needs a very different kind of slithering movement.
The vast majority of players are likely to pick either the two legged or four legged version anyway so we'll have to see if it's worth the effort adding in other variants, it's not a priority right now but there's definitely a possibility that some more variants will be added at some point if people ask for it.

I know estimated update time frames were provided but wanted to check what is the possibility to land on the ground soon. This single update will dramatically increase the amount of time I spend playing. On average at the moment I play 15-20 minutes of pure joy. After that I soetch to day of dragons or something else. If I could land and just walk around it would increase my time spent in the world. I know it's super early dev at this point but I'm just curious because we have seen the models and walking animations haha.

I personally love amphipteres a lot, if you made that an option I would pick the legless one, I think they look very gracefull
