Man, all the Metal Gear talk, love, hype. I decided to play as many of them as I can. MGS3 on my Xbone, Peace Walker on PS4 (Have never touched it). MGSV PS4. Ugh, ZERO means of playing MGS, so I’ll be skipping to MGS2 on the Xbone, then MGS4 on the PS4. I think I can do it before Xenoblade Chronicles DE next week... Right? Lol

Really? Hmm, maybe people skip over the justification of BotW's greatness and revolutionary nature because so many people talked about it when the game came out and it just seems "obvious" now. Hanson did a great interview with game devs back at GI that, at least for me, really highlighted how special it was, since they have a unique perspective and are better at describing what they like about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk-EnbS42dM

Assassin's Creed has been doing climb anywhere for years. Sure, they added a stamina meter, but stamina meters aren't new. The only thing they did that I hadn't seen before was irreparable, breakable weapons and that was probably the most controversial part of the game. Other games have done go anywhere at the outset too, e.g. Skyrim. And I think creating a game where you can do the story missions in any order you want really requires a simple story, as BOTW does. I don't think most open-world devs will want to sacrifice their more sophisticated stories for go-anywhere, but we'll see.

Chris Davies

I think BotW will turn out to be revolutionary simply because of the climbing: so many games have promised things along the lines of "if you see it, you can go there" but there always seemed to be limitations. In BotW, the climbing allows you to potentially go anywhere and it impacts your strategy, how you approach a camp or tower, how you infiltrate Hyrule Castle. It's hard to think of another game that really delivered on that promise of "go anywhere". That said I think it's too soon to say whether it is revolutionary, that's surely determined by its influence on other games and its too soon to see that yet.

Jake Z

I'm so tired of people saying Breath of the Wild is revolutionary without explaining why. It's a great game, but it's Assassin's Creed with looter elements. It's like saying the new God of War was revolutionary. Maybe revolutionary for the series, but not for games in general.

Pound for pound, the greatest personal week in gaming history was in September of 2001, when TWO of my lifetime top ten released. I vividly remember being still kinda lost in the fear and fog following 9/11, and driving with my buddy to a mall in San Antonio to pick up that week's two big releases: Ico and Silent Hill 2. Each had an immeasurable impact on me, and there is no way I could possibly pick just one as my game of 2001.
