Yes indeed, the gravity gradiometer puts a major crimp to stealth in space. It was used this way in Jack Williamson's The Cometeers. The evil Cometae ship was invisible, but the gravity detector revealed its presence. All very shiny, as ever! I have a minor unrelated-to-this-update question for my own curiosity - I'd noticed that while parts 1-4 of my "Building the Imperial Navy" are quoted under "Astromilitary" (of which I am duly appreciative), parts 5 & 6 aren't. Which, well, I'm not trying to say that they _should_ have been, you understand, that's none of my business, but I did just want to check that the reason wasn't that I'd plunged off some great quality cliff while writing those parts and needed to go back and fix 'em, or some such...? (October was quite a chaotic month around here, so my self-assessment of such things is not all it might be.)

I would have to say that Dr. Forward's Gravity Gradiometer is the nail in the coffin for realistic "Stealth in Space". Sure, you might find a way to hide your waste heat, make your ship invisible across most of the spectrum, but unless you can generate real negative mass, you can't hide the mass of your ship. Imagine missiles with GG sensor heads: They are programmed to head towards masses that aren't visible, i.e. cloaked ships. The second you use your antimissile systems, boom, you've made yourself visible. The other thing I like is that you raised all my objections to Star Trek's Transporter. Thanks! Don't forget that the writers had it break down more than once to keep it from saving the crew's bacon.
