Re. Eugenics: As practiced in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, eugenics was the proposition that _social_ problems- crime, poverty and alcoholism- could be solved by preventing the breeding of "degenerates" and "the feeble-minded". Thus was born Social Darwinism a pseudo-scientific rationale for blaming the underclasses for their circumstances. Margaret Sanger, considered a feminist pioneer for her advocacy of making birth control available, advocated birth control because she believed that poverty could be ended by getting people too poor to support large families to stop breeding. Ironically, we are all probably descended from those who were determined to breed and raise children despite all obstacles- people who gave up breeding when times got tough didn't propagate though tough times.
