Yeah, but it is more like a team was late getting started for the Project Icarus' 2013 contest, so they cribbed Daedalus as a jumping-off point

IIRC in the novel 2010 they used liquid ammonia, which is Not cryogenic, so would not boil off

For overclocking, NTR could be "overclocked". Sure, it already operates at a safe maximum temperature... but if you took it to a temperature where the metal goes from, well, metal strength to firm plastic... Could you use that extra "Umph" to get a bit more speed?

The Storable vs. Cryogenic article reminds me of movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact, the good old Discovery One still had sufficient propellant to make it out of Jupiter's orbit and head back to Earth. I'd love to know how the propellant, if I remember correctly, liquid hydrogen, didn't all boil off in the 9 years Discovery was abandoned in Jovian orbit? Sure, it out at Jupiter, but if there was refrigeration, it was turned off long ago. And the Discovery was covered in sulfur, darkening it, so it would soak up more solar radiation. Would it be enough to boil off the LH?
