A Planet Looters example: Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Moon's "Planet Pirates" trilogy. Plunderers/slavers wait until a recently established colony is _just_ ripe enough to be looted but not able yet to defend itself. The seemingly incidental side effect- that human expansion is being sharply curtailed as a result- turns out to be significant.

One thing to note about the Prefix Code thing from Star Trek, from my point of view, only Kirk, Admiral Kirk, and Spock knew about this. Why? Well, Admiral Kirk would have been told about this backdoor and Spock... well he probably found out on his own. So you wonder why would Star Fleet put in a backdoor to their fleet? Then you think about the captains that went... funny. In that Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper sort of funny. So having a backdoor to take away their toys would be necessary. From the Memory Alpha site, it's not common knowledge that you can do this.

Looking at SF space battles from the 50's and 60's, it's WWII naval battles IN SPAAaaaaace! Now you have to include ECM, hacking, and other techniques to your list of combat options. AI controlled ships that sandbox all input from other ships, so that they can make sure there's no malware, intrusion ware, or other nasties tucked into the transmission. Yes, you have ships controlled by AIs, but they all use a Linux based OS, and the opposition knows how to hack that...
