When Marc Miller set up buying spaceships in Traveller, many moons ago, he used the only thing he knew: Mortgages. Living now in Puget Sound area, and interacting with folks that worked in the fishing industry, it turns out that buying your own boat is an entirely different process. For one thing, the payment period for a business loan like that is 15-20 years. So find that golden triangle to make a lot of money off of fast! And you have to more or less prove that you can pay off that loan, so you have some experience in the business you're getting into, like fishing, so having a lot of experience in various aspects of the business you're about to get into is necessary. However, most cargo vessels are owned by corporations, which have the institutional knowledge and connections to more or less guarantee payment for a vessel. So I don't see independent haulers being anything more than small potatoes in any SF setting.

One solution to hijacking is not letting your passengers into the crew space. The easiest way to do that is to use passenger modules that fit into your cargo system. That way, there's no way they can access the ship. Of course, you'd need someone or something to watch over the passengers, so either a set of stewards or stewbots to do that.
