Thuper Thecret Asteroid Bases are the mainstay of folks that want "Yarr!" space pirates. But as you point out and others have as well, you can't hide them. In a well traveled star system, there would Navigation buoys keeping track of space traffic. An unregistered burn would show up and the space patrol sent out to investigate. (It's course and speed would be known, so yeah, there'll be someone waiting for them back at their base. When they're low on propellant...)

I remember playing around with Trillion Credit Squadron and never coming up with a feasible design. But the battle rider concept strikes me as wasted on _Military_ concerns. In terms of trade, Starships are very expensive, so why not make a "Jump Ferry"? It's a large framework, just like a battle rider, but instead of carrying warships, it carries cargo system ships. Ships that otherwise would never leave their home star system. Oh, wait, it's been done before... what was that novel, it had a large about of sand and big worms in it... :)
