Yes, Niven and Pournelle had something similar in FOOTFALL. It was a generation ship combined with some crew in cold-sleep. Groups of sleepers would periodically awake to ensure that the generation population kept the faith.

This is one of the reasons why my wife and I do not have any children. Some of those awkward questions are Really awkward.

Very good points!

Ken MacLeod found a solution for Kim Robinson Stanley's issue with generation ships with _Learning the World_. The ship had some really long lived crew, and the rest where gestated 20 years before arrival at the destination world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning_the_World

Jet Kitten: Hey dad, do you know Jones? He's about your age, right?
John
Jet Kitten: No one says you can't have stealth. You just can't have _tactical_ stealth. Strategic stealth, yes, if you can wait years for your disguised as asteroids ships to get into position, then go for it. But the political terrain will change faster than the military terrain. Your one time enemy is now your friend, and there, nearby, is a ship full of warriors in cyrosleep ready to rain atomic death down upon them. Stealth only makes sense if you use it for first strike missions. Defensive usage is useless, as you want your opponents know that you have the oomph to keep them away.
