Though platinum actually has industrial uses, instead of being totally worthless like gold. Anyway I think the real value in asteroid mining is supporting space industrialization. As in: not paying outrageous prices just to ship stuff up Earth's gravity well.

A general comment on money and the magic metal, gold. There's enough of the yellow stuff in an average metal asteroid to crash the gold market if it were extracted. Even if it's never brought to Earth, just knowing that there's more gold in some asteroids than we've ever mined on Earth would do it. And that's just gold, the Platinum group of metals (PGM) market would be shot as well. Just one asteroid processed for it's metals would do it.
