Neal Stephenson had that in several o f his novels. In SNOW CRASH some people infected with nanotechnology were doing a complicated calculation. The waste heat from the nanotech would kill each one as they finished their part of the calc.

I met Drexler when he gave a talk about nanotechnology in Colorado Springs in 1986-87 I think. He was doing the book circuit pimping his book Engines of Creation. Lots of interesting questions were asked and he made a point that one could make a nano-mechanical computer that you could hold in the palm of your hand, and yet be more powerful than a Cray. (Hyperbole time.) But... when it was running, you'd have to pump ice cold water through it, or more correctly, put ice cold water in one side and get live steam out the other sides. Interestingly enough, Adam Warren, comic book artist, in his Dirty Pair: Sim Hell series, pointed out the problem of using Medic Paste for fast healing... the heat generated by the nanomachines would cook the person they were trying to heal.
