Agreed. Servoris was more or less saying that if an author insists on hammering the square peg of a tramp freighter into the round hole of a post scarcity civilization, here is one way the fragments will look like.

John

That bit on Tramp Freighters by Sevoris Doe does have some assumptions. The biggest is that "Post Scarcity" civilizations are even possible. And if they are, well, to paraphrase Captain Kirk: "Why do you need a starship?" If you can build things quickly, atom by atom, and make whatever, then you're at least a Kardashev II civilization, bordering on KIII. I made my opinion about Tramp Freighters over in the thread of the MeWe group, but I didn't want to talk about the basic assumption of fabbers and the like. If you want characters in your fiction/RPG that people can relate to, then don't use the magic dust (nanomachines) or the magical cornucopias (replicators) in your setting. You'd end up with the Roddenberry Paradox of having a setting that is as alien as any really alien world could be. I don't believe in the "Singularity", instead I believe in the "S-Curve". We're grabbing all the low hanging fruit right now, and it's going to level out sometime in the future. It will be more advanced, but until we can even pretend to be a Kardashev I civilization, we're not going to have any magic tech to spread around.
