Case in point: R2D2. Perhaps the most beloved movie character in the entire Star Wars franchise. And there's Robby the Robot, for a more historical example.

And as a side note, I saw *lots* of posts from people who got very teary with the Opportunity Mars probe was shut down. Just because it is an autonomous repair bot in no way prevents the audience from becoming emotionally invested.

Lone Echo is a VR game where you play as just that- an AI android that assists a human who is tasked with overseeing an outpost alone, and the android is the one that does all the dangerous stuff, has all the tools needed to do so built-in, and has many copies of himself that are less intelligent he can transfer the AI into should his body get destroyed. He specifically has a more friendly personality to keep the solo overseer company as a friend as well, which was a nice touch- and an interesting way to get around space madness, if the AI was sufficiently convincing. The conflict in the game is that so much goes wrong, the human can no longer be safe, thus the direct danger is justified rather than contrived.

One thing I see in most SciFi is the lack of remotely operated/autonomous repair bots. Even on the Expanse, Amos has to suit up and go manhandle some part of the ship while in flight. I know the refrain, "If there isn't a human in direct danger, then it's not exciting enough for television." Bullhockey. I'll say that there will be more than enough tension with a Scotty or Amos trying to fix a problem via a remote as you'd have with them suiting up and heading down the Jeffries Tube.
