I remember reading a news report about someone developing a lower energy inertial confinement fusion system that made use of high explosives to provide the extra Umph to get the Li6-D pellet to fuse. It also didn't require laser 360° around the pellet. Just behind it, as the explosives did the hard work of squeezing to fusion temperatures. My google fu is failing me, and I don't remember where I saw it.

The entry about the Command Roster, made me think about the role of a Communications Officer. It's more than a glorified radio operator job, Uhura was more than that. In many episodes she was coordinating information from all over the ship, which implied that she was not a sole operator, but an officer with a staff or department. When she was on duty, she was the voice of the Enterprise, and only ceded that to the Captain. More than once she would say "Reports from all decks..." meaning that members of her department were coordinating information and reporting it back to her, probably in text, as speech would be too confusing. She was in a very important position, one that got overlooked by a lot of fans.
