*Officer Jenny looks up vicky in the trainer database and spits out her coffee* vicky: nice reaction! *thumbs up*

Bosparan

There's something to that, but I don't think there are many trainers that would actually (successfully) manage to prevent a Pokemon from evolving. I sure would love to read Viki try and tell Riolu not to ... That's probably also the reason Dragonite was forbidden but Dratini was not. In general, forbidding pokemon imports and then not check on them seams ... lax. That said, on the ability to verify, in most other regions that might actually be an issue, but with Lucarios and Aura, they should be able to verify intent to violate the law

Apeljohn

Without any way to measure a pokemon's Level, species is only vaguely indicative of power. A level 100 Rattata knocks the socks off a Level 36 Charizard. There are exceptions, like Legendaries, but they're rare pretty much by definition. So I imagine for the most part it's not worth going into too much detail at passport control. Anyway, anyone with a seriously powerful team can probably fly in under their own steam (contra IRL). The controls are presumably just to stop mook-level criminals.

Rakkis157

Surfer dude sure is a karen lol

Joseph (T3mmie)

You must be really loving this part with all these updates for PTV coming out! That's great, because I am loving it too! Thanks for the chapters!!! <3

RageLord

Finally! someone uses a Sharpedo in one of their stories. Sure they are probably hard to put in but they are so cool!

SpankMyBeef

YEESSSSSSSS! Honestly im loving the PTV updates and this chapter is just another masterpiece. And the family’s in Alola now! Been waiting for that for a while now. But i will say, i hope douchey surfer bro gets his comeuppance soon. I know that this isnt Wuxia, but he needs some face slapping ASAP.

Seras

Not this time. I'm going to be gone most of the day. No chappy today.

Green0Photon

Note also that historically, before WWI, customs and tariffs made up like half the federal government's revenue. Before the income tax. Customs enforcement and anti smuggling was very big even before WWI. They might not care about IDs as much, but preventing illegal goods, or not getting the tax they want, that was important. So I'm very confident they'd take precautions against the entrance or exit of Pokemon.

Green0Photon

Tldr: I'm talking about visas and passports and border control, which were created due to WWI plus the technological advances of people being able to travel in greater numbers. Even with super lax requirements, there's typically at least *something*.

Green0Photon

I'm not talking about normal air security. I'm talking about visas, and the officers who give them and check them. Their current form was created because of WWI and standardized from WWII/the UN's creation. Though they've existed in some form since antiquity, since writing, linked with the solidifying idea of a nation state and the increasing ability to travel, especially in greater numbers. This *will* include the Pokemon world as it currently is. Historical visas and passports were more of an endorsement of one e.g. King, to make e.g. a merchant's life easier, due to how insular people were with the inability to travel. With countries having any general conflict with each other of any significant size, i.e. anything like a world war, where you care about who's apart of what country, that's how borders become a thing. Because you have spies and smugglers operating through neutral countries. So customs were added to train stations and sea ports and airports. Planes especially I'd imagine would check this in particular, after landing. They're few with not too many people, and they're very centralized. In Europe it was always harder with trains -- too many people and the need to go through many countries. But notably this fic is after a world war where countries did take the idea of borders seriously, it looks like. (Unless it was just Kanto vs Johto?) And you have this island nation that actually really does have the ability to control its borders very well. That cares about smugglers. Sure, they might not have all the air security stuff set up, but they definitely are going to some form of border control. Whether it's after they land, getting a vacation visa beforehand, or both.

Håvard

But then they cant legitimately confiscate pokemon if they find it convinient beacuse there own paperwork proves it wasn’t poaching.

Nyazathoth

I go to sleep Seras posts new chapter I wake up It’s Christmas for like the 6th day in a row.

Suika Nine

Silly alolans with their Island challenges and their knock off Ginyu Force posing.

Suika Nine

Little do the locals know, Vicky herself is considered a WMD by the Indigo Govt.

Phyr

Does this count as defamation? At the very least it's a massive waste of time......

Just A Dude

At the rate she's going, we'll have the resolution by tomorrow.

Just A Dude

Problem is, if that stuff exists it can be hacked. Smart poachers would swap those out just like a car thief would falsify the VIN on a stolen car.

Just A Dude

Yup. Assholes gonna asshole.

Evernigh

I mean if your being pedantic Jangmo-o's ancestors were all "poached" and brought back to Kitakami so is the child of a poached pokemon still poached?

Tsume Eiranis

thank you for the chapter :)

Bosparan

Thanks for the awesome chapter! Kind of wondering: Shouldn't they have immigration controls at the airport where you declare the pokemon you bring in? I mean - those can be way more powerful than most person-bearable weapons, and they let visitors just stroll in with six of them per person ... Sure, native trainers stroll around with them just as well, but they're locals, completely different story than a simple point of ingress a potentially hostile nation could be using... Or well, to prevent a lot of trouble on the poaching front, by registering legitimately caught and brought-in pokemons on immigration right there, to prevent issues such as the one in this chapter.

Klever Kilvanya

Wow... guess that surfer dude doesn't see pokemon as sentient beings in their own right, 'How dare you bond with an animal I deem you not worthy of', utterly ignoring the reaction of said being.

Mr Crowley

Airplane travel was very different before 911, what we consider normal air security of rather recent.

Garrett Cannon

wow if u told me a week ago that we would still be at the conference i would believe u. hopefully we get a sneak peak of Lance training a magikarp.

Seras

Phantom Star will be back soon. Honestly I didn't really intend on going on a break like this in the first place. But it just worked out that way. I'm not writing tomorrow, so maybe I'll start working on PS again monday and prep a chapter for a release soon.

Fruchtig

How long will the space series be on pause?

THE SAVAGE KITTY

No you don't get to laugh doing a cliffhangar is horrible

Happy

Nice.

Teej

Had a feeling I should check patron again tonight

Gear-2557

Why do I have the feeling that the League had someone standing by for the second Aloha called to ask about Vicky?

Seras

Most Alolan's would probably not even understand the significance.

Green0Photon

I'm not quite sure we're referring to the same thing? AFAIK from the traveling I've done, you have the security check before you board, and if you're entering a different country, a customs and immigration thing, aka border control, after you land. Perhaps rarely the latter can happen beforehand? But usually that's if the two countries specifically set something up, e.g. the Dublin Ireland airport which has a US Border Control section, so that you go through the line first and exit in the USA as if you flew from a different state, no security stuff on landing. Security and Customs can feel similar but serve completely separate purposes. And the latter is different from needing to show ID before boarding, be it before the final line in the security section, or before boarding with your ticket. Specifically, I'm thinking of how after you deboard, you directly enter one of a few lines, that depend on where you're a citizen vs the country you're entering. Recently it's been scanning your passport to get a printout, but still seeing a border control officer at a desk with another line. Either way, it's always a line where each family group goes before the officer who checks your ids more thoroughly, asks what you're doing on your visit (vacation, business, and more detail in particular depending on their laws), and then they may then go over what you're bringing in. It's been a while since I've had this, but sometimes there can be a separate line after you grab your checked luggage, where an officer will look through your suitcases to confirm you didn't bring in anything you shouldn't have. In this specific case... It could be Kanto communicating with the Alolan embassy in Kanto/the state department (or equivalent) in Alola, confirming the Pokemon you're bringing beforehand and giving you the okay. Which is the really strictly form, really. But they're still gonna do something in the airport on one end or the other, if not both, typically at least on the receiving end, just so that that country with their own authority is checking who you are and giving you a visa. That's the stamp. Unless there's literally an Alolan official who provided a vacation visa and approval of the Pokemon, and actually did the check in Kanto just before boarding, usually in a special isolated section that Alola approves of, then all that customs work is gonna happen in Alola. Or maybe still will, anyway, if very very briefly. For example, entering the US, where GlobalEntry means it's a short line with a quick facial scan, where the officer doesn't even need to interview you iirc. I feel like I remember them just waving up through, despite being a similar entry desks as normal officers. The point is, if even Officer Jenny is sus of poached Pokemon, then there's enough social understanding to have some level of border control. Border control is all about id, even centuries ago (though back then, no picture lol, just a written description). Someone approved those Pokemon to enter. And more directly, whether it was before or after landing, someone also approved on the Pokemon entering. Even if this is both a blind spot and not, with lower security but poacher awareness, as long as they had any border at all, someone at least confirmed those Pokemon as being allowed to enter. What a mess. (In world, lol. Damned police hahaha.)

MrDenim

Would the Alolans even care about the star badges? They're still not a part of the League system and do their own thing with the Island Trials, so star/regular badges wouldn't mean anything to them. The only part of her file that they might even slightly care about would be her first-year conference win.

BelligerentGnu

Please, if Riolu must stick around, let this be the start of her growing a tolerable personality.

Sup3r J4k3

I hope: 1.) she takes over team skull after showing them that they're not living up to their potential (completely unintentional, just kinda happens) 2.) she curbstomps random surfer bro #1 for being a smug a$$hat 3.) she builds the budding companionship with riolu by going through the island trials

Cinnamon Sugar Courtney

Surfer Dude is annoying, I mean sure we know that Vicky isn't a poacher and stuff but he didn't need to look so smug for a minor going to police holding. I'm sure that pokeballs probably have data on where the pokemon was caught... or at least I'D add that in as a feature, and it IS a feature in the game series.

Seras

Ah gotcha. Yeah Vicky and fam did go through customs. In Kanto, and you have to realize this is Pokemon world 90's. Other than difficult transit, there is no real FEAR about this sort of thing. Kanto checked all the pokemon using the Alolan registry, it all came back fine, so they put the trainer on the plane and sent them off.

Green0Photon

I think I just used the word immigration instead of "Immigration & Customs" because I feel like they always say it as the latter, and my brain just shortened it into the former.

Green0Photon

Whoops, used the wrong word, I think. A Customs Declaration Form. And then an "Immigration and Customs" line and counter, before they let you into the rest of the airport. So in this case, I'd imagine on the plane, if not beforehand (sometimes you need a form approved by their Embassy in your country for some very controlled items), you'd fill out a customs form. IRL that's food and other goods, maybe medicine. Here, I'd imagine you'd list the pokemon you're bringing, too. And then they'd go through the immigration and customs line, and have someone look over all of those, and stamp your passport. Or take you in for questioning. Granted, this Pokemon world especially, is definitely in the process of opening up. Very understandable for the process to be super wonky. Taking what we see at face value, I'm not sure which is funnier: Alola just not having customs, or that Vicky and Fam went through it all and got all the papers and passports and stamps (included in which Officer Jenny looks at), but that obviously they're not gonna believe it anyway. They're gonna discriminate against foreigners anyway, especially on a topic as sensitive as this, even with all papers all good. Yeah, the latter will be my head canon for the moment.

Seras

Well there is 100% an immigration path, but that's not what Vicky and family are doing here. I mean we know Samson Oak immigrated here.

Seras

LOL

Duke of Coffee

Wow, it is always one person ruining the the party. 😡 Hopefully Jenny would get the information of Vicky and let her go.

Xegzy

defintily true about not super out there looks, but she got 16 star badges, and won the confrence with almost no effort in her first year, and has dragonite. and came back with all sorts pokemon people havnt seen. and have made steps towards research. she IS famous. though I understand that fame is a bit limited.

Meaning Yellow

First reaction: Another chapter? You spoil us! After reaching the cliffhanger: *throws phone*

Endymion2314

This is going to be hilarious when she has to explain, "Sorry I left my WMDs at home in order to not cause an international incident."

dicloniuslord

prob in this (dont remember since its been a good bit), but in the anime the indigo conference is for kanto and the silver conference is for johto. but yeah it really makes sense for there to only be 1 conference

Tyler Tate

I thought the Indigo Conference is Kanto and Johto together

Perf

I am actually so excited for when Vicky goes to kalos and causes an international incident with her goomies

Green0Photon

Interesting that Alola doesn't have an immigration line to go through. This chapter gives me nice and fuzzy feelings of warm island vacations. Nice especially during the winter, and I've been very cold today. Now I'm imagining a scene of Vicky doing what's happened to me before, being given an immigration form to fill out on the flight before landing and panicking not knowing how to fill it out correctly.

Matthew Moore

Wow, what a Karen.

Dr.Dragon

The Johto conference is the same one. It's called the Indigo plateau for a reason. It's the tournament for both regions.

dicloniuslord

Ah right, completely forgot about that… probably because she curbstomped it in a day or two (so what 4-5chap at most?) lol

Mistress Araenidae

Victor: "Didn't I say stay out of trouble?!" Vicky: "BUT THAT'S MY NAME!!!"

Perf

All my homies hate beach bro #1

Jack

Nom nom nom

Teatime42

Ugh, surfer dude is right to be wary, but the smug deserves a beating anyways XD Edit: autocorrect is dumb

Croupier Bookie

Thanks for the chap and Darn you cliff hanger!

meow

Can’t go a day in a foreign country without getting the cops called, as expected of Vicky

Freya

Tyftc

Straven

Thank you for another delightful read and I don't doubt the cops are going to be 'this is way over my paygrade'!

THE SAVAGE KITTY

16 though she hasn't gone to the Johto conference yet

Straven

16 star badges.

Gigifiy

I'm hoping Vicky kicks Guzma in the butt and into gear lol she's got the Team Skull energy

THE SAVAGE KITTY

Damn now we wait

Gigifiy

Sure, but it's a lot of people to inform about this one random kid. Plus, it's not Vicky is running around with Protagonist Looks. You can't pick her out of a crowd because she doesn't wear a Golden Pyramid with tri-color hair

dicloniuslord

I give it all of about 10sec of jenny pulling her file before seeing the “kanto conference winner” and 8 star badges

Vara

The cliff is steep with this one. Can't wait for the next chapter. I always enjoy a bit of tension.

Xegzy

ya figure the league and even the visas would phone that crap ahead.

Wizikarp

Surfer bro needs some petty revenge

dragonslaver

You spoil us with these rapid releases! MOAR!

A Bellator

Thanks for the chapter Seras! I hope your on the mend.

Kai

lol, not even a full day and Vicky's getting the cops called on her already! YAY, Riolu bonding time! Hopefully they do build up a bond strong enough to make her evolve. So glad to see Alola arc progressing

THE SAVAGE KITTY

Hehehehe its here

Andrew Bazhaw

Not Beach vacationer Vicky, but hooligan Vicky

Nikolina Roganovic

Beautiful, gorgeous, amazing I love being back to the fun adventures as much as I enjoyed the battles
