Happy

Nice.

George Hicken

This is in a thread response to “That’s a lot of system for just the electronic warfare suite.” however, which suggests it’s more sensors than would be provided by other captains

Suls

Thanks for the new chapter!

Robin

BTW I loved the modern crabit story (on the spacebattles forum), maybe the Phantom Star crabits will start some future version of a v tuber type show? We know very little about popular media in this world so far?

Yo @Seras, note this is mostly coming up because I'm in a phase of 'analyse everything with (estimated) numbers' for a personal/work project that's been ongoing the last month. So this came to mind only mildly related to the specific chapter. Anyway, caveat given, I remember a while back a comment in a thread about not wanting to overuse alternative pov's. That's a totally fair concern and I tend to not like multiple POV's when they're used as their own chapters in a vast majority of works - I find they muddy a narrative and are rare to seen done properly. (general note for anyone interested) For a good example of an author massively improving in this department over a single series see the 'inheritance cycle' (eragon books). Early pov chapters were all over the place, narratively speaking, but then Chris started nailing the idea of closing a smaller narrative thread while adding to a building, broader narrative which really enhanced his writing imo. Most times, I don't think authors ever get to this level of application so prefer to avoid books where the story is told primarily through multiple povs. Your work doesn't lend itself to this style of multiple POV's as chapters and I don't recommend it as it seems a massive pain for low-to-no-gain. However, alternative POV's tend to add a "rule of cool" bump of hype when they're **in line with an existing narrative**, instead of their own, separate sub-plot. Every time you use it in this and other works it's been awesome honestly. Makoto's friends being blown away and disturbed by her actions, Pokemon Viky's friends being exasperated and impressed, and Hammond's view of Kat have all added depth to the broader narrative that emphasized what the MC was doing instead of needing to explore something totally unrelated to what we were reading about. This, in my opinion, is a perfect use of minor POV's that don't end up as seperate protagonists from a narrative perspective. So, my recommendation is this: I think you can increase the amount of POV's you use to add punctuation to particular narrative points or to highlight humorous things significantly more often. Like 2x or 3x the amount without ruining the flow. I suspect if we added up the words attributed to non-vicky pov's to vicky pov words (across all stories where there is vicky or vicky equivalent), we'd get something like <=5% (and while I'm now vaguely curious I'm definitely not writing up the webscraper and NLP AI necessary to confirm that intuition, sorry I don't have firm numbers haha). I think, **so long as it stays narratively topical**, you could probably up this to 10% or even 15% (2x or 3x) and see good returns on it for the audience. Part of the concern with 'overuse' is also on reader perception, and it always feels shorter when it's *sandwiched* in a vicky narrative. It's a bit of a trick of memory (a personal favorite field of armchair study for me) - take friends, family in town, or dates to multiple distinct locations and it will feel like you've spent more time with someone in the same amount of hours and each individual event feels shorter - I've never seen a formal study for this but it has absolutely panned out in my own life. Mind you, if alternative POV's are just much more time-consuming or harder to write then ignore this advice. My love of new chapters overshadows everything lmao. But if avoiding increasing alt pov's is *just* derived from a concern that they'll dominate or muddle the narrative or a fear of overuse then this comment is to let you know that you have a lot of room to play with before that becomes an issue. Again, this is just me thinking wayyyy too much about numbers in my life for work-adjacent reasons and the thought coming to me reading this chapter and thinking "man it would be hilarious to get a paragraph of Sin being really confused about vicky. but just like, a few paragraphs". In any case, tftc and don't let this idea slow down any updates please :)

"Family discount" is about to get used on her. Probably not gonna short change her but... yeah.

Antony Claughton

Yep. Although it will be interesting to find out how he got out of the doghouse. Something his family did, the war is going badly and they need the ship…. or his using/sharing some of the technology he got from Kat???

Freya

Tyftc

Just A Dude

Pretty sure it'll be more a tit for that type deal. He does her favors, and she repays the favor with tech.

Just A Dude

My bet is he cuts her a good deal anyway because she's family.

Barkeep

Problem with hiring a professional negotiatior....you need to negotiate with them first!

Barkeep

Best part of having your own starship, you can do your own escort mission to the barons new location!

Seras

Mostly because she trained herself to build things in secret. The fact I added a crew and they all have to learn about each other and learn to work together doesn't mean everyone but Kat, it means Kat too.

Jeff091

hi, thanks for the new chapter

Karma Anor

I thought the baron had died at first. Her visiting home is a good thing given all she’s had going on.

Tan

Thanks for the chapter!

coldfusion23

Tftc! <3

Lishmael

Baron-finding quest is a go

Drumic

The ship (and crew) must grow!

Ben Siems

Thanks for the chapter

R. Maxwell Steele

Edit Suggestion Insert comma "No better..." to "No, better..." both times below ⬇️ No better to keep the sensors witNo better to split this into two actually. Or even three. I could upgrade the sensors with the sensor panels, and then add a bit more to the comm unit? No better to keep the sensors with the comm so it would have a faster connection for the EW system.

Mark

Happy to see more of this!

Alex Almond

Well Kat was reusing old scrap to make something simple and readily available on the market, i assumed she was hinting that other captains would just buy new stuff rather than trying to make it from scratch, hence they had a 'more relaxed budget' and didn't have to scrape and scrounge on free junk like it looks like Kat is doing

Eric Hicks

Thank you for the chapter, I enjoyed the read.

TobiVanKnobi

Nop I'm a typical Caffeine Zombie 🧟☕ 😂

Wesley Reynolds

Thank you for the chapter!

Garrett Cannon

shes def losing against her uncle on the ship sale

Ralph Smit

Hope she not going in service best part is the freedom of the novel

Mariana

Loved this chapter! Not a lot of action happening but there was some cool tech talk to keep me interested

Nathan R Chase

she gonna lose that haggle to her uncle

Straven

Thank you for another great read to enjoy! Don't doubt the station is way past happy she was willing to come all the way back home to drop that ship off for sell, make them a good penny I expect which is good for them! Yeesh I love your stories a tad too much......ignore that, no such thing as too much love for your stories!!!

Eriach

🤣 bright eyed and bushy tailed you are not in the morning huh lol

N0m_N0m

The Baron had the plan of making her feel indebted so that when he asks her for something useful in the future she doesn't feel resentful (you do NOT want your experimental genius inventor to loathe you) but I doubt the new guy got the memo

Duke of Coffee

So heh Baron left. Kat, people don't stay at one spot for long, well it is time to find the Baron. 😜

MikeL

Why does she never ask for help? She is building a shield array and guessing how they can be used. If only she had someone on her ship who could help with that!!

Tsume Eiranis

thank you for the chapter! Hope the replacement for the Baron will be supportive of Kat.

THE SAVAGE KITTY

New chapter lets fricken GOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Paratus

Typo: The massive man looked around a bit curiously as he took in the sight of everyone crowded aroun d,e <==

Nobody

As much as the Baron wanted to keep her in his back pocket I doubt he didn't leave a way to contact him. Also I gotta agree a "relaxed budget" usually means more available funds where a tight one means more restrictive. That said between the song cheat and the Crabbit they're already skipping all the expertise and labor costs.

George Hicken

“A more relaxed budget” - to me that reads as a larger budget or less budget constraints. Perhaps you meant “a tighter budget”?

Some Total Kretin

TFTC!

Endymion2314

Honestly she should hire her cousin Marie, experienced and can help explain Kat to others.

TobiVanKnobi

“Morning!” I greeted and he nearly flinched as he looked at me I get also scared by happy people in the morning! 😂

Aaron Greene

Yay!

SerenityInSound

Starting to sound like she needs a professional negotiator on her crew. It seems to have been a continuing problem for her.
