New Community Guidelines - The End of Patreon?
🕑 Added 2024-03-17 13:57:28 +0000 UTCThere are new terms in the updated community guidelines (specifically around the topic of explicitness of consent) that are going to make it difficult to keep Bloomin' Faeries to continue running here on Patreon. I'm in deep thought at the moment to figure out if I modify the Faeries to fit those guidelines or if I simply move everything elsewhere.
To be candid, I've been internally struggling with those issues myself for nearly a decade. There are many aspects of the Faeries that aren't explicitly consensual, and Patreon isn't going to put up with that. The terms of the community guidelines can be strictly interpreted in such a way that even a non-sexual non-consensual act, IF PRODUCED BY AN ADULT/18+ CONTENT CREATOR, would constitute a violation of the community guidelines. Something innocent like a magical makeover (think Cinderella), if done without explicit consent by an adult content creator, would violate the community guidelines.
It's pretty harsh, but I get where they're coming from. I'm not upset at Patreon and hopefully you won't be either. They are very likely forced to impose those guidelines by payment processors (credit cards, PayPal, etc.). But it means we have to adapt and live with it.
I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I'm very curious to hear what you think about this or what you think I should do.

I keep wondering when a major website like pronhub is going to start a new service for comic or AI creators.

I might start doing what you suggest to buy me time in the short term, but it's not a long-term solution.

It wouldn't be beyond verification. Patreon can verify (and hold me accountable for) Patreon-only content published on my site or on Discord. Now whether they have the time and resources for this is another story, but it's best I find a setup that protects me from the whims of payment processors for good.

Would it work/allowed to post just a link to your actual content (probably with an innocuous teaser panel) on a separate private site? Then you wouldn't have to port over all your current subscribers. ... But probably the powers that be would be less than thrilled with the past content you already have here, so even if allowed, not worth trying... Nevermind.

I tend to agree, and I think I'll set it up quickly as an immediate safety net in case something happens in the short term.

I would rather you move than compromise your work. I agree Subscribe Adult is a good choice, quite a few creators have moved there because of the censorship/restrictions of Patreon.

I also heard about Gumroad, but that’s not a huge revenue stream for me, so I don’t really mind/care. I already do have my own site (bloomingfaeries.com) where I used to have a rudimentary membership system set up. I might reboot it and have a hybrid system that allows me more autonomy and less dependency on external services like Patreon or Subscribestar (which, IMHO, is next anyway).

Pattyron seems to be heading in a more moralistic direction. It is not the only platform - Gumroad has done the same. Changing its terms of service so content is no longer appropriate and users can no longer use the service. TG Comics was hit by that saturday and suddenly everybody was scrambling to set up new subscriptions with a new client. If you have your own site and IP you would be better of setting up something there.

this has happened to a few creators I followed, they moved to subscribestar also make sure you backup everything because when Patreon boots you you lose everything (It happened to one of the creators I mentioned)
