The Power of Setting Small Goals

Today I’m excited to share one of the biggest ways that I protect my joy of creating.
As artists, it can be super easy to have the wind taken out of our sails when it comes to creating and sharing art. This usually happens to me when my expectations are too high.
In this video I share a simple philosophy that changed my life and, to this day, keeps me moving forward and creating in gratitude.

Dylan, I’m so sorry to hear about your struggle, and at that same time so excited to hear you aren’t giving up! I think this is the natural struggle of creating in the Information Age. We probably have to work harder than the artists of the past not only to protect our love of the process, but also to discover our purpose for creating in the first place 🕊️ so glad to have you here!

This is a seriously impactful philosophy to me. I've been on the verge of hanging up my musician hat off and on throughout the years, and a lot of it came from a similar lack of gratitude and appropriate goal framing on my part. My old (terrible) album got "just" a few hundred plays back almost a decade ago, few of them to the end, and for the longest time I felt like that was something to be ashamed of. Especially seeing a world where TikTok kids get millions of views for 10-second clips of them talking over somebody else's video, it made me question why I should keep going with music. Lately it's been a similarly big slump over the idea of being a small creator in a world of AI generated music, and that has been hard as well. This has really helped change my perspective toward my own creative efforts and I am truly appreciative for it. I feel like giving up is out of the question now.

Oh boy, this is how I live my life! As someone with unique medical and physical needs, I was essentially forced to have small goals to survive. I was fortunate enough to have amazing cheerleaders alongside me, to help me not only reach my goals, but challenge me appropriately. To this day, I cherish and relish in the small victories.

This! I'm at a point where I am proud of myself writing an email that I had been putting off writing regarding my music or even one person coming up to me saying they loved my art at a concert...how wonderful just to be seen who I really am and be able to GIVE to people. Most people tell me they were able to calm down hearing me sing and play. This is everything!
