"15,000 spectators came to the Nürburgring for the 7th edition of the 500-kilometer race.
In the 1965 500-kilometer race, Abarth’s winning streak was broken. Since the founding of the 500-kilometer race, the overall winner had always driven an Abarth. In 1966, the overall victory was contested solely between Abarth and Alpine. During Friday’s practice, Mauro Bianchi made the first mark with his Alpine, clocking in at 9:25.1 minutes.
A Nürburgring debut was celebrated by the Mini-Jems.
The company Jem had given the BMC Mini-Coopers a new, aerodynamic body.
63 vehicles lined up at the start on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Shortly after the Le Mans-style start and before the entrance to the South Hairpin, a massive pile-up occurred. Ian Alexander’s Diva GT overturned and blocked much of the track for the cars behind. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Unfortunately, the fastest qualifier among the touring cars up to 700 cc, Manfred Berthold (BMW 700), had to retire due to the crash. After the first lap, Mauro Bianchi led ahead of Ernst Furtmayr, Udo Schütz, and Johannes Ortner. In the second lap, Mauro Bianchi set a new lap record that would remain unbeaten for the rest of the race. The first fast Alpine, driven by Henri Grandsire, retired in the third lap in the Adenauer Forest. Rolf Stommelen gave a brilliant performance but had to retire early due to engine failure. He set the second-fastest time of the race.
In the prototype class up to 1000 cc, Herbert Müller led at the halfway point.
In practice, he had outpaced his competitors by over a minute. The scheduled pit stops began with the Alpines on lap 9, while other teams didn't head for the pits until laps 11 and 12. In lap 14, when Mauro Bianchi stopped for another fuel stop, Udo Schütz (Abarth 1300 SP) took the lead. Udo Schütz later retired due to a gearbox failure. Mauro Bianchi regained the lead, but in lap 19, he had to make an unscheduled pit stop due to a broken suspension. Ernst Furtmayr took over the lead. Mauro Bianchi’s daring comeback ended with a broken axle. On the final stretch at Döttinger Höhe, Ernst Furtmayr lapped Herbert Müller, who nonetheless finished third and joined the winners on the podium.

It is said that Mauro Bianchi pushed on the ring so hard, in 1967 the Alpine died on him after one lap in practice, erupting in flames. But the real shocker is his practice lap time, a 9:25.1, in a 1.3L car. That is insanity. So here is your challenge: beat it!

I managed a 9:42 on my first run, then on my second run a 9:42, again, same on the third run... Neither lap was anywhere near perfect, too many mistakes, also standard setup and 98% grip. That said, the absolute madlad Sean Campbell came within 5 seconds of the 9:27 mark ON 96% GRIP! Some people are just born different I guess B)

9:27 + 1:00 minute Idiot handicap on the first run. I know again why I never drive the nordschleife.
