I think that Chihaya and Aya have pushed Eri to excel but that she has enough experience with her reserve to finish her dive safely: at the end of apnea, even among world-class Apneists, spasms are existing and demand an important fight phase

Looks Eri will black out soon.(And I hope so, It will make the story more interesting.)

Also, I doubt this “new skill” has much (if any) practical application. The drawbacks, which include inability to move, equalize, see, hear, etc., are just too great. It wouldn’t even really allow Chihaya to stay underwater any longer, since, even if, as the picture suggests, she still has air left, her heart, no longer encumbered by her conscious mind, would likely speed up, continuing to circulate the same stale oxygen over and again until her brain shuts down completely. She wouldn’t even have to inhale water first.

A few observations here: one, the only way Chihaya could have blacked out without alerting the other two would have been BECAUSE of the hyperventilation on her part. Next, Aya actually probably would have won the day, had she not been forced into action by her cousin. Third, Aya noticed her companion’s distress because of her ability to gauge both of their tolerances, such as in AGVsG 18, where she suggested cutting their dive short because of Chihaya struggling, even though Aya herself could continue. This would explain why Eri didn’t recognize the signs: she’s not familiar with the duo’s “unique” style. Finally, there must be a reason Chihaya didn’t surface herself, and though hyperventilating almost certainly played a part, she is gifted enough to tell when her limit is approaching, even if she “feels” fine. I alluded to this in another post’s comments, but she likely holds a desire to watch over/protect Aya, even if doing so endangers herself.

Nice. Even pushed Eri close to her limit.
