Priestess Saki was conducting her services in the hall of the Turtle God. She was to sing underwater a 300 word hymn in His praise, and after exhaled all her air from her lungs, she must stand still and pause for many minutes until He answered her prayer.
The Turtle was part of the island folklore, its defender against the mega-tsunami that would have shattered the island into pieces. Only the generation of the island priestesses, like Saki and her mother before her, got to see that the deity was for real.

So many questions! My 2 cents worth is that the level of performance needed for this ritual (to say nothing of overcoming claustrophobia) means that she's likely to be a bit older than when the competition with Aya and Chihaya took place. But no doubt we'll learn more in due course. A great picture and text anyway.

This is lovely, but I have MANY questions. Are we to believe this is current day Saki, as in 15 years old? Why exactly does this task fall on her shoulders (has her mother died or grown too old)? What methods of training did Saki use to prepare, and did she learn those from others before her (like her mother), or decide to go it alone like she normally does? Finally, is she not using her bikini (that to remind everyone holds special significance to her, like her father’s dog-tags) out of choice, or is a one-piece a requirement for the ritual, like a uniform, so that the priestess is more modest in a deity’s presence?
