"Admiral...here....!"
Akashi came to me with her daily "quota" of steel and bauxite. What she delivered was extremely valuable, equipping the three of us with the resource to fight off the Abyssal Fleet that had completely blockaded our Naval District Island - or what was left of it. What she had in her hands could keep us alive for three more days.
"Akashi, good work. Now you get some rest...."
The beautiful girl showed dark circles under her eyes. I knew Akashi does her deep water retrievals in the day and her metal work in the shop through the night, sometimes with no sleep for days on end. And I knew not where she got her metal anyway, our fleet had sunk too deep in the waters for that. Over 100 meters I thought?
"No, I'm fine. now I'll go back to work..."
"...." I turned back to my work bench and the bad radio. The damned machine has been silent since the day of the bombing, despite the reasonable repair work that it had consumed. A substantial share of Akashi's fetches have gone into that product. It better start working now.
"Understood, Akashi, but don't kill yourself over it."
Akashi, who was about to depart, looked back and smiled. Who but someone like her would go on for weeks risking her life, with barely enough food or sleep? ...food? And I recalled then that she had surrendered all of her rationed meal to me for the past three days. I hadn't given it much thought, as I have been hungry as a wolf myself and eagerly fed on Akashi's plate as she looked on, smiling - but was she okay?
"Admiral, " Akashi said.
"Yes?"
"I can die for you. Now. Anytime." She smiled again, and walked out cheerfully.

War is cruel. A statement that none would disagree upon. The enemy is merciless, fearing for their own downfall as much as our own. There's nothing to grasp at, especially in the wide ocean depths, and thus you would find little to keep you going. But sometimes, it's others that give us hope... And often times in those circumstances one must sacrifice far too much in return for far too little. Some may disagree, and that is fine, having value over their lives is not a selfish act. But would it be selfish to give your life for others, if it meant seeing their smile along the dawn of the ocean sky? To reach for that speck of hope, endlessly in pursuit of that chance for victory? Perhaps this, is the bleak future Akashi strives for, even if it may cost her own life, and regrettably, the image of the weakened smile of the Admiral after such a long struggle for victory...
