🕑 Added 2023-07-23 12:59:01 +0000 UTCThere seems to be many critical discussions on Disney's Little Mermaid (2023) (not the original animation, but a live action film) noting that its "Woke" re-interpretations (whatever they are) contradict what they expect out of a Disney fairy tale female protagonist.
However, this point actually reminded me of the sense of wrongness when I (as a young kid) watched the initial animated version, which was caused from the fact that the 1989 movie has serious reinterpretation of its own, mostly relating to how the story ends. As many of the wise audience know, the real Andersen fairy tale had a gloomy and somewhat fatalist ending, where Ariel couldn't win the heart of her Prince and thus must perish. She was given her last chance for survival (i.e. if she stabs and kills the Prince she lives...what??), which she obviously hesitated to carry out, and the rest is history.
So in my view the recent argument on authenticity falls short, and even more, it should be noted that Hans Christian Andersen was a...(continues)

Well to be fair that was made by Pixar who yes are owned by Disney but are their own studio. Also Pixar does not seem to be as good as they used to be. As 10 years ago the thought that several of their movies would bombed or be mediocre would be a foreign thought. Because back then their movies was more flawless when it did come down to it

They did new stuff with Elementals and that has only been a real success in Asia, not in the US or Europe ._. And exactly the same with the movie Soul. That one additionally suffered from Covid of course but the tendency that Disney's "home markets" aren't into new IP is visible there as well. Raya had low revenue in general. Teenage Kraken by DreamWorks paned out even less. Little Mermaid (2023) made more than all of these together! So Disney is well advised to ignore the haters for the most part. Also when they did go really creative like with Turning Red, there were other kind of haters >_> You cannot please everybody. Edit: The last time I remember them having a hit with new IP was Zootopia. That was a blast.

Well if you really want to bring up the little mermaid movie. People are so against because they are so tired of Disney just doing remakes of their old classic movies. Rather then being creative and making something new. But no instead the Disney corporation wants to take the “safer” and less creative route. Which is what many people are against
