I think you interpreted that scene with the mom wrong. She didn’t stay in town, she stole a car to get out of town. That’s what she’s used to, how she’s been living all these years on the run, I think.

Nick’s mom doesn’t know who the captain is or that it was him at her house, she pulled up just as he was leaving and didn’t see him and she doesn’t even know what he looks like or that he works with her son
