What is a good overview or a mental model for dealing with fitness tests? Your answer to my question last week iterated to me that I’m not dealing with comfort tests correctly and am failing them. Looking at my own situation, my wife is uncomfortable with my getting in better shape and her gaining weight as that has come up several times in the past few weeks. I’m anticipating this will happen more in the near future related to fitness and finances. I’m planning on some changes to our financial arrangements in the future that will bring up this uncomfortable subject for my wife. I make considerably more money than her and she has massive student loan debt that she feels guilty about. My wife wants to essentially use my growing income to payoff the student loan debt as quickly as possible. This makes rational sense from an overall interest payment perspective, but with the state of the relationship right now I’m feeling used like a bottomless piggy bank for her prior poor financial decisions. My plan for the near future is to have it where if she wants to pay more on the student loans she will have to come up with that money from her paycheck. She will just have to accept that it will take 4-5 years to pay it off instead of me paying extra to pay it off in 2-3 years. I expect to get pushback on this and she will make the rational argument appealing to me that we should pay more to reduce overall interest paid. My stance is that it is her debt to worry about and if she wants to pay it off faster then figure out a way to make more money herself.
